Apnea Galapagos is a specialised freediving centre situated on Santa Cruz Island, Ecuador. Unlike generalist dive shops, this centre focuses specifically on the discipline of apnea, providing a dedicated environment for those looking to master breath-hold techniques in one of the world's most iconic marine settings.

The centre operates with a mission to develop ocean ambassadors, combining technical skill acquisition with environmental awareness. Whether you are looking to experience your first breath-hold dive or are pursuing a professional career in freediving, the training is centred on safety and building a natural connection with the surrounding waters.

The team is led by experienced instructors, including Jesse and Alan, who bring a wealth of expertise to the Santa Cruz operation. The instruction is characterised by a personalised, one-on-one approach, ensuring that every diver receives the specific attention required to master their technique and manage their physiology safely.

As a PADI affiliated centre, the training follows a rigorous and recognised curriculum. The instructors focus on building confidence and safety protocols, which are essential when diving in the dynamic conditions often found in the Galapagos archipelago. The course catalogue is comprehensive, covering the entire PADI freediving progression. Newcomers can begin with a Discover Freediving session, followed by the PADI Freediver and PADI Advanced Freediver courses. For those looking to advance their technical skills, the PADI Master Freediver certification is available.

For divers pursuing a professional path, the centre offers PADI Freedive Instructor and EFR Instructor training. They also provide an intensive 'Zero to Hero' programme spanning four weeks, which includes First Aid and Oxygen Provider certifications to ensure a complete professional foundation.

The centre operates a private boat for its excursions, providing a dedicated platform for freediving sessions away from the larger crowds. This allows for a more controlled and personalised experience during your training or exploration dives.

The marine life surrounding Santa Cruz offers an extraordinary opportunity for freedivers to encounter large pelagics. You can expect to see Hammerhead sharks (Sphyrnidae), Galapagos sharks, and various species of rays, including Eagle ray (Aetobatus) and Manta ray (Mobula alfredi). The presence of whales, Orcas, and even Weddell seals adds to the diversity of the encounters.

In the shallower areas and around the reef, you will find a variety of sea turtles and marine iguanas. Schools of fish such as Snappers (Lutjanidae), Jacks (Carangidae), and various species of Triggerfish (Balistidae) are common, alongside colourful Parrotfish (Calotomus) and Surgeonfish (Acanthuridae).

Smaller residents of the reef include pufferfish (Arothron hispidus), moray eels (Muraenidae), and various butterflyfish. These encounters provide a constant stream of interest for those watching the reef flat or navigating through swim-throughs.
