Sentral Alea Miami suits you if a city break matters as much as the time in the water. This is a four-star apartment-style hotel in central Miami, with private kitchens, balconies, a rooftop pool and enough room to make a few nights in town feel less like living out of a suitcase.

The useful distinction is space. A studio works neatly for a couple, while the larger apartments give families or groups separate bedrooms, bathrooms and a proper living area. Air conditioning, free WiFi and in-room laundry facilities cover the less glamorous parts of travel. Not glamorous, perhaps, but very welcome when the kit bag has started developing opinions.

You are at 230 NE 4th Street in Miami, in the city centre rather than beside the beach. Bayside Marketplace is a three-minute walk away, and College/Bayside rail station is only a few steps from the building. First Street station is about 350 metres away, while Government Center metro station is roughly 850 metres on foot.

The location gives you plenty to do without arranging transport for every outing. Bayfront Park is about 750 metres away, Bicentennial Park roughly 750 metres, and the Freedom Tower around 400 metres. Museums are also within walking distance, including HistoryMiami Museum and Frost Science. For sand and sea, Hobie Beach is about 5 miles by road, while Miami Beach is around 5 miles away by road.

Miami International Airport is about 7 miles away by road. The hotel has a central urban setting, so expect city streets and nearby restaurants rather than a resort beach outside your door.

The accommodation is built around apartments rather than standard hotel rooms. For two of you, the Studio keeps things simple, while the One-Bedroom Apartment gives you a separate bedroom and more living space for spreading out after a long day. The Two-Bedroom Apartment suits up to four guests and has two bathrooms; the Three-Bedroom Apartment goes further for groups of up to six, with three bathrooms to prevent the morning queue becoming the main event.

Food is handled by four on-site outlets, giving you more choice than the usual single restaurant and a menu that quietly gives up by the third night. Bobe Kitchen & Bakery covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Mediterranean food, speciality coffee, smoothies, sandwiches, pizzas and flatbreads. It opens from 7am to 10pm, making it the practical option for both an early start and a late return.

Inari Sushi Fusion serves lunch and dinner, combining traditional sushi with Peruvian flavours. The Empanada's also serves lunch and dinner, while Gogo Fresh focuses on soups and salads. Breakfast is included, with breakfast service running from 7.30am to 4pm. That unusually broad window may suit you if the morning starts slowly after travel or a full day out.

The property also has a coffee house on site, plus outdoor areas with barbecue facilities, a patio and a terrace. There is no bar listed as a separate hotel outlet, so the emphasis here is food, coffee and the city outside rather than a dedicated drinks lounge.

The rooftop pool is the obvious place to put the day on pause. It comes with skyline views, poolside lounging, sun loungers and pool towels, while the surrounding lawn gives you room to sit out rather than balance a book on the edge of the water. There is also a hot tub for the part of the evening when your legs have had enough of sightseeing.

The fitness centre is more than a token room with one lonely treadmill. That gives you a useful option for keeping mobile between flights, city walks and the next early start.

If you are travelling as a couple or with family, the apartment layout does much of the work: cook something simple, sit on the balcony, use the rooftop pool or walk towards Bayfront Park. Miami Beach and the wider beach area are a drive away, so the hotel’s own pool is the convenient water break when you do not want to organise another outing.

Check-in starts at 4pm and check-out is by 11am. You need photo identification and a credit card at arrival, and the minimum check-in age is 18. Cash is not accepted. A refundable damage deposit is collected by card on arrival and returned after the accommodation has been inspected at check-out.
