Bida Islands, Koh Phi Phi: Twin Pinnacles of the Andaman Sea

Approaching the Bida Islands, you'll see two distinct rocky outcrops breaking the surface of the Andaman Sea. These aren't just isolated rocks; they mark the beginning of an extensive underwater system, offering a range of dive experiences. The site is divided into Koh Bida Nok and Koh Bida Nai, each with its own character, ensuring that even after multiple dives, you'll find new areas to explore and new marine life to observe.

Koh Bida Nok features a sheltered, shallow bay on its northern side, providing a calm entry point. Here, sunlight penetrates clearly, illuminating vibrant coral patches and a variety of smaller reef fish. This area is ideal for buoyancy checks and getting comfortable, allowing you to focus on your diving fundamentals while surrounded by the rich marine environment that defines the Phi Phi region.

Moving deeper around Bida Nok, the topography shifts to a series of large and small pinnacles that extend from the main island. These formations create natural aggregation points for marine life, often surrounded by schools of yellow fusiliers and bannerfish. Navigating around the bases of these pinnacles and ascending their sides reveals hidden crevices and overhangs, where you might spot scorpionfish or moray eels sheltering from the current.

On the northwest side of Bida Nok, at approximately 20 metres, a small cave offers a unique penetration opportunity. This feature requires specific training and experience for safe exploration, providing a different environment from the exposed reef. Inside, you might find species adapted to lower light conditions, adding another dimension to the dive profile for those with the appropriate skills.

Koh Bida Nai, the other island, presents a more dramatic profile with steep walls dropping to around 28 metres. Its southwest side is home to the submerged Fantasy Reef, a deeper section characterized by layered coral formations and larger schools of fish. This area demands more attention to depth and buoyancy, rewarding experienced divers with intricate reef structures and a greater sense of exploration.

A notable feature of Koh Bida Nai is a picturesque archway, often teeming with baitfish, which leads into a shallow hard coral garden. This swim-through provides a different perspective on the reef, transitioning from the open water to a more enclosed, vibrant ecosystem. Beyond the arch, sandy patches are common, where you might find leopard sharks resting, a frequent and anticipated encounter at this site.

Throughout both Bida Nok and Bida Nai, you can expect to encounter a diverse range of reef inhabitants. Blacktip reef sharks are often seen patrolling the reef edges, while barracuda school in the blue. Look closely among the corals for boxfish, pufferfish, and trumpetfish, and keep an eye out for sea turtles gliding past. The combination of shallow reefs, steep walls, and sandy bottoms supports this wide array of species.

Currents around the Bida Islands are generally mild and manageable, though they can vary from gentle to strong depending on tidal conditions. Dive plans are typically adjusted to utilize more sheltered areas when currents pick up, ensuring a comfortable dive. Visibility here typically ranges between 10 and 25 metres, offering clear views of the extensive coral formations and marine life.
