Jardin de Salomon, Les Trois Ilets : Martinique's underwater garden

Diving Jardin de Salomon, you immediately understand its name as you dip below the surface. Located just off Pointe de Salomon, this site begins with a remarkably sheltered, shallow area that truly feels like an aquatic garden. Even in the first few metres, you are enveloped by a rich tapestry of sea life, with gorgonians, sponges, and brightly coloured corals forming a dense, living landscape that captivates from the very first fin kick.

This initial, protected zone is a sanctuary of calm conditions, making it an ideal environment for those taking their first breaths underwater or for younger divers exploring the marine world. The vibrant ecosystem here is not just for novices; the sheer density and health of the corals, combined with the clear, shallow water, offer a visual feast that rewards careful observation from any certified diver.

As you move gently away from the immediate shallows, the terrain gradually unfolds into a series of successive plateaus, extending down to a maximum depth of 20 metres. This stepped profile allows for a progressive dive, accommodating various skill levels while continuously showcasing the site's rich biodiversity. The light plays differently across these deeper sections, highlighting the contours of the reef and revealing a new layer of marine activity as you descend.

Life here is abundant and diverse, a constant dynamic spectacle. Keep an eye out for sardes moving in schools, bright balistes patrolling the reef, and numerous parrotfish grazing on the corals. You'll also encounter sorbes, the striking queen angelfish, and the sleek barracudas (thazards), each adding to the site's lively atmosphere. The reef hums with activity, with different species interacting across the various habitats, from sandy patches to coral outcrops.

One of the standout features of Jardin de Salomon is the frequency of turtle encounters. These gentle giants are regular visitors, often seen gliding gracefully through the coral formations or resting peacefully on the sandy bottom, providing memorable moments for every diver.
