The mood is private, polished and decidedly unhurried. You can take breakfast, a treatment, a drink or a meal wherever it suits you, including on your residence deck, on the beach or at a destination chosen with your butler. The design comes from architect Yuji Yamazaki and draws on traditional Japanese architecture, with The Retreat forming the social and culinary centre over the water.

This is a place for divers who want the evening to be as carefully arranged as the day at sea, and for couples who would rather have their own space than share a resort timetable. The fully inclusive approach covers dining, beverages, spa treatments, water sports, excursions and wellness activities, although one notable dining option on the neighbouring island is treated separately.

Kudadoo sits in Lhaviyani Atoll, Maldives, on a private tropical island surrounded by lagoon and coral reefs. The beach is directly accessible from the resort, with white sand and snorkelling access rather than a road, town centre or taxi rank competing for your attention.

Kudadhoo Maldives Beach is around 100 feet away, while Komandoo Beach is about 0.8 miles from the property. Hammerhead Beach lies roughly 1.3 miles away and Gaaerifalhu Beach about 2.3 miles away. In practical terms, the island itself is the setting: you move between residences, beach, water and The Retreat rather than heading out for errands.

Madivaru Airport is around 5 miles away. Maafaru International Airport is about 21 miles away and Ifuru Airport roughly 31 miles away, although the relevant arrival arrangement is a private seaplane transfer from Malé Velana International Airport.

The accommodation is built for space rather than merely somewhere to leave a wet towel. The over-water residences have open-plan layouts, natural light, sea views and large outdoor decks with private infinity plunge pools. You also have a private entrance, seating and dining areas, a sofa, desk, air conditioning, a ceiling fan and soundproofing.

For two people, the single-bedroom residence gives you room to spread out without turning the stay into a group project. If you are travelling with family or sharing the island with friends, the double-bedroom residence adds a second bedroom and bathroom. The larger option accommodates up to four guests, while children of any age are welcome; children aged 13 and over are treated as adults for occupancy purposes.

The useful evening details are all present: a bath or shower, bathrobes, slippers, hairdryer, coffee machine, kettle, minibar, room service and a drying rack for clothing. Daily housekeeping keeps the residence in order, and 24-hour in-residence dining means you do not have to dress for dinner simply because the day has left you horizontal.

The all-inclusive formula is built around food and drink rather than a narrow buffet timetable. Keyolhu Restaurant at The Retreat serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with contemporary fine dining, ocean views and an Executive Chef whose cooking brings together Asian flavours, Maldivian seafood and French influence. Breakfast is à la carte, and room service runs around the clock.

There are two bars. The Retreat Bar works as a lobby bar and relaxed meeting point, with cocktails, mocktails, freshly pressed fruit and vegetable drinks, light appetisers and homemade natural flavours. Kudadoo Bar also serves light appetisers between meals, which is handy when lunch has been postponed by a particularly stubborn patch of blue water.

For more deliberate eating, dining can move to the beach, your residence deck, Dream Island or a private setting arranged by the butler. The wine cellars hold 70 labels in the owner's collection and 80 in the inclusive selection, while the cheese cellar carries more than 30 artisan varieties. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices are available, along with menus shaped around dietary requirements and preferences.

The 5.8 Undersea Restaurant is an all-glass venue 5.8 metres below the sea at sister island Hurawalhi, serving contemporary lunch and dinner. It can be booked for private dining, but additional charges apply for Kudadoo residents, so it sits outside the otherwise fully inclusive routine.

The private pool attached to each residence gives you an obvious place to cool down without sharing the water with half the island. On the beach, sun loungers, umbrellas and pool or beach towels make the slower option easy, while the over-water Sulha Spa offers massages, facials, Balinese massage, Zen Shiatsu, a sauna, steam room and the Lonu Cave Himalayan salt chamber.

Yoga and meditation can be arranged anywhere on the island, with personal training and a fitness centre available when simply lying down begins to feel too ambitious. Tennis and padel courts add something more purposeful, and the games room includes billiards and table tennis. Board games and puzzles are available indoors, while evening entertainment, live music, film nights and live sports provide alternatives to staring at the sunset as if it has personally achieved something.

On the water, you can choose paddleboarding, sailing, kitesurfing, jet skiing or parasailing. The island also arranges luxury sailing, dolphin expeditions, sandbank and Dream Island picnics, turtle watching, manta ray excursions and sunset cruises on the luxury yacht Bella. A personal butler can shape these into a quieter day for two or a more active itinerary; the useful part is that you do not have to build the plan yourself.

Arrival is by private seaplane transfer from Malé Velana International Airport, with round-trip transfers available as part of packages. Send your flight details and expected arrival time to the hotel before travelling so the island transfer can be arranged. An airport shuttle service is also available through the hotel.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. The minimum age for check-in is 18, and private or express check-in and check-out can be arranged. A 24-hour reception, concierge, luggage storage, lockers, currency exchange and daily housekeeping cover the practical edges of the stay.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort, and laundry and ironing services are available. Cash is an accepted payment method. The resort is wheelchair accessible, including entire units on the ground floor, and the accommodation includes non-smoking rooms, safety deposit facilities and air conditioning.

Kudadoo runs on solar power, with 984 panels covering 1,643 square metres of The Retreat roof. They produce 575 MWh annually, with peak power of 320 kWp. Water is desalinated, and drinking water is bottled in glass at a nearby sister property to reduce plastic use and transport emissions.

The resort uses sustainable building materials, sorts and recycles waste, and avoids plastic straws and utensils in favour of biodegradable alternatives. Wood is sourced from Canada, New Zealand and Indonesia, while fish and seafood come from local line-fishing practices designed to avoid bycatch. Healing Earth amenities use biodegradable products, organic essential oils and fair-trade botanicals.

The marine side is treated as part of the responsibility rather than a backdrop. A resident marine biologist supports research and education around manta rays, and the resort works with the Olive Ridley Project on sea turtle conservation. Sustainable diving and snorkelling practices are built into the activities, with attention paid to the reefs, turtles and pelagic visitors that make this part of the Maldives worth the flight.
