Hakuraa Express, Meemu Atoll: Maldives Channel Drift

Hakuraa Express is a channel dive in Meemu Atoll, designed for drift diving. The site's topography, typical of outer-reef channels in the Maldives, funnels water, creating conditions that attract large pelagic species. As the day transitions into evening, Hakuraa Express undergoes a transformation. The grey reef sharks begin to congregate, forming schools that can number up to 30 individuals. This post-sunset gathering creates an immersive experience, placing you as an observer within a complex nocturnal ecosystem. The interplay of fading light and the silhouettes of the sharks against the darkening water provides a dramatic perspective on the reef's life cycle.

Beyond the prominent pelagic encounters, the reef itself supports a diverse community of marine life. The coral formations are home to numerous schooling reef fish, their colours adding vibrancy to the underwater landscape. Closer inspection of the coral blocks reveals intricate habitats, where you can find lobsters (Panulirus genus) and reticulated moray eels (Gymnothorax favagineus) concealed within the crevices. These smaller inhabitants reward patient exploration, adding layers of discovery to each dive.
