English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside German and Greek, so you can deal with the practical things without resorting to underwater hand signals. Horizon Beach Resort is a sizeable beachfront resort with 120 rooms, two outdoor pools, gardens and a proper spread of places to eat and drink.

The mood is geared towards an easy, self-contained stay rather than a tiny hideaway. Couples have sea views, a beach bar and a seaside seafood tavern; families have a kids' club, children's pool and play areas. For a diver, the useful part is simple: once you are back on dry land, the resort gives you somewhere to eat, cool down, swim, or disappear into the spa without having to organise another outing.

You are in Mastichari, Greece, on the north-western side of Kos rather than in Kos Town itself. The resort sits directly on the coast, with a 200 m golden-sand beach, sun loungers, parasols and showers. The sea is not a distant view from a balcony here; it is the edge of the property.

Tam Tam Beach is about 300 m away, and Troulos Beach is roughly 0.5 mile away. Mastichari Beach lies about 1.5 miles from the resort, while Kos Town is around 12 miles away. That gives you a quieter base by the water, with the island's larger sights reserved for days when you actually fancy getting in a car.

Kos International Airport is about 3.4 miles away. You can reach the resort by taxi or bus, and an airport transfer can be arranged through the hotel. A car-hire service is also available if you want to reach places such as Asklepion, Antimachia Castle or Kos Town under your own steam.

The room choice is mainly about the view and the amount of elbow room you want. A sea-view or sea-front room suits a couple who would rather open the balcony door onto the Aegean; garden-view rooms keep the outlook inland, while terrace rooms give you outdoor space without making the view the whole point. For three people, the standard rooms use two single beds and a sofa bed.

The family rooms are the sensible route when four people are travelling together, with more space and room layouts designed around several beds. The Superior Family Room is the one to look at when you do not want every suitcase, beach bag and pair of sandals competing for the same patch of floor. For a couple, the Superior Double or Twin rooms offer a little more room than the standard category, while the sea-front version puts the view first.

Every room has air conditioning, a balcony or terrace, a refrigerator, satellite television, a telephone, a safety deposit box and a private bathroom with a bath or shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. The refrigerator matters more than the television when you return hot and thirsty. Daily housekeeping is included, and some rooms have a drying rack for clothing, useful for the ordinary holiday laundry generated by a beach resort.

Half board is the main formula, with breakfast, lunch and dinner built around the resort's dining offer. Horizon Restaurant serves Mediterranean food on a terrace with sea views, while the Seafood Tavern puts seafood directly on the beach. Both keep the dress code casual, which is useful when the most formal item of clothing in your luggage is the shirt that survived the flight.

Breakfast is a buffet beginning at 7:00, with continental and vegetarian choices. The kitchen works with fresh, local ingredients, and vegetarian and gluten-free diets can be catered for. A packed lunch is available for days when you are leaving the resort for an excursion rather than sitting down for the midday meal.

There are two named bars. The Beach Bar handles cocktails and snacks beside the sand, while the Pool Bar does the same by the pool, including a swim-up setting at the main pool. Snacking is not continuous throughout the day, but a snack bar is available and room service runs during limited hours from 11:00 to 22:00. In other words, plan your post-dive appetite around the meal service rather than expecting the kitchen to operate like a 24-hour galley.

Two outdoor pools give you a choice between a proper swim and the separate children's pool. The main pool has a swim-up bar, while sun loungers are available around the resort and on the beach. The direct beach access also gives you an easy non-diving water day, with snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding, boat excursions and jet-ski activities available on site.

For the muscles that have spent the day carrying kit, Horizon Spa offers massage, facial treatments, a sauna and a jacuzzi, with a relaxation area for the part where you stop pretending to be energetic. The fitness centre and yoga classes cover the more disciplined approach. A massage chair, steam room and further spa treatments are also available.

If you prefer activity with a scoreboard, the resort has table tennis, darts, billiards and a games room. Bicycle hire and excursions provide a way to see more of Kos, including Kos Town and Asklepion. Evenings bring live music and themed nights, so you can choose between a quiet drink by the water and a little organised entertainment without leaving the property.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. The minimum age for check-in is 18. Early arrival and late departure can be requested, subject to the arrangements for your stay. Children of all ages are welcome, with cots available on request; extra beds are not available.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and free private parking is available without reservation. You also have a 24-hour reception, concierge service, luggage storage, car hire, a mini-market and a souvenir shop. A doctor can be called on request, while laundry and dry-cleaning services cover the less glamorous consequences of salt, sunscreen and several days of wearing the same walking shorts.
