If your ideal dive holiday includes a proper beach, a choice of places to eat and enough room to disappear for an afternoon, this resort has the right shape. Neptune Luxury Resort is a large beachfront resort in Mastichari, with landscaped gardens, artworks, several swimming pools, restaurants, bars and a spa gathered into one property. It is built for couples, families and divers who do not want every non-diving decision to involve getting in a taxi.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside French, German and Greek. That matters when you are discussing an early breakfast, a room request or the practical details of your transfer. The resort also caters well to families, with a kids' club for children aged 4 to 12, a children's pool, babysitting and family accommodation.

You can make the stay as active or as idle as you like. Spend the morning on the beach, take a book to the adults-only pool, book a massage or wander out for dinner. There is enough going on to keep a non-diving partner occupied, but you are not obliged to join in with every last activity. A sensible arrangement.

The resort sits directly on the coast at Mastichari, on the island of Kos, with its own 200-metre stretch of golden sand. Sun loungers, parasols, showers and a beach bar keep the useful things close at hand. The sea is not an excursion here; it starts at the end of the property.

Mastichari village is about 3 miles away, while Kos Town and its port are roughly 11 miles away. Tam Tam Beach is around 300 metres from the resort, and Troulos Beach is about 1 mile away. If you fancy a change of scenery, Marmari Beach is around 3.5 miles away and Golden Beach about 4.5 miles away.

The area also gives you a few straightforward land-based outings. Mill of Antimachia is roughly 5 miles away, Antimachia Castle about 5 miles, and Asklepion around 9 miles. The resort can arrange car hire, and excursions include Kos Town, Zia Village and Asklepion.

The room choice ranges from compact twin rooms for solo travellers or couples who spend their days outside, through to apartments, suites and family rooms with considerably more breathing space. If you are travelling with family or simply prefer not to live out of a dive bag in a corner, the Executive Apartment, Executive Suite or Two-Bedroom Suite makes more sense than the smaller twin categories. The larger options include two bathrooms, which can be more valuable than another decorative cushion when several people are getting ready at once.

For a couple, a sea-view room keeps the Aegean in the picture, while the Deluxe Twin Room with Private Pool offers a more private way to cool off without claiming a public lounger. The resort also has first-row apartments and a very large Meltemi Suite with sea views for travellers who want space to spread out properly. Family rooms are available for groups, including layouts designed around children.

Bedrooms are air-conditioned and open onto a balcony or patio facing the garden or the Aegean. A fridge, kettle, tea and coffee facilities, satellite television, bathrobes and slippers cover the practical end of the stay. The rooms also have mosquito nets and soundproofing, while daily housekeeping keeps the post-dive disorder from becoming a permanent installation. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort.

Breakfast is a buffet served from 07:00, with American and Greek breakfast options. That early start is useful when your day begins with a boat rather than a lie-in. A packed meal is available for days when lunch happens somewhere offshore, and continuous snacking means you can deal with the gap between breakfast and dinner without pretending a handful of nuts is a meal.

Poseidon Restaurant covers breakfast, lunch and dinner on its terrace, with Mediterranean cooking, local ingredients and sea views. Neptune Fish Tavern sits by the beach and concentrates on seafood for lunch and dinner, with a more relaxed dress code. The resort has five on-site restaurants in total, serving Greek and international flavours, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available. Half-board is the standard meal plan, and a selection of local wines and spirits gives you something more interesting to investigate than the minibar.

There are seven bars across the resort. Ocean Bar works as the beach stop, while Pool Bar keeps drinks and light snacks beside the water, both with signature cocktails. Room service runs around the clock, although dinner is not served late, so check the evening arrangements if your dive schedule tends to run on island time.

The beach is the obvious place to start, but it is not the only place to spend a surface interval. Five swimming pools are available across the resort, including the large Main Pool with a swim-up bar and a heated Adults Only Pool for quieter laps or an undisturbed read. Pool and beach towels, loungers and parasols are all part of the setup. The children's pool and Kids' Club keep younger guests occupied while you pursue the ancient diver's art of sitting down.

Neptune Spa covers 200 square metres and offers massages, facials, body treatments, a hammam, sauna and jacuzzi, with a relaxation lounge for the part where you stop pretending you are going straight back out. Couples' massages are available, as are foot, back, neck and full-body treatments. There is also a fitness centre, yoga and fitness classes if you want to persuade your legs that yesterday's current was character-building rather than tiring.

For something more active, you can use the on-site water-sports facilities for kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, jet-skiing, fishing and boat excursions. Snorkelling is available too. On land, there is cycling, hiking, bike tours, mini-golf, table tennis, darts, billiards and a games room. Live music and themed evenings provide the evening programme, while cooking classes, local-culture tours and excursions to Kos Town, Zia Village and Asklepion give you alternatives to another round of poolside archaeology.

Kos International Airport is about 5 miles away, around a 30-minute drive. An airport shuttle is available for an additional charge and should be arranged with the hotel; the resort is also accessible by taxi or bus. Free private parking is available on site, with an electric-vehicle charging station, and car hire can be arranged if you want to explore beyond Mastichari.

Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. Bring photo identification and a payment card, and give the resort your expected arrival time. Guests under 18 must check in with a parent or official guardian. Luggage storage, a 24-hour reception, private check-in and check-out, an on-site cash machine and a minimarket are useful details when your flight and room times refuse to cooperate.

Free Wi-Fi covers the resort. Room service, laundry, dry cleaning, a concierge, a doctor on request and a beauty shop are available, and the property has lifts and accessible rooms. Smoking is permitted in designated areas, pets are not allowed, and the accepted payment methods include cash, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

The resort uses energy-saving light bulbs and recycles waste. They are modest, practical measures rather than a speech about saving the planet, but they are part of the way the property operates. For a beachfront resort, keeping the routine visible and useful is preferable to covering the walls in green slogans.
