There is a useful lack of fuss to this resort: you have the sea in front of you, a choice of places to eat and drink, and a room where the air conditioning can do its job while you recover from the day's heat. Estival Concept is in Paliouri, on the coast of Greece, with a direct sandy beach and the sort of facilities that make sense when your main ambition is to eat well, cool down and do very little for a while.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside German and French. That matters when you are arranging a transfer, asking about dinner or trying to establish whether the room service menu will rescue you from your own lack of enthusiasm for getting dressed. The resort also offers family rooms, a kids' club for children aged 4 to 12, babysitting and a separate children's pool, so it can work for a mixed-age trip as well as a couples' break.

The mood is modern and relaxed rather than formal. You can move from the beach to the pool, from the pool bar to the restaurant, and finish the evening with live music without turning the day into an organised military exercise.

You are staying in Paliouri, Greece, directly beside the sea. The resort has its own sandy beach with sun loungers and parasols, so reaching the water does not require a car, a timetable or a heroic walk in flip-flops. The main beach area has clear water and a practical layout for a day spent alternating between swimming and lying down.

Navagos Beach is about 1.5 miles away by road, while Porto Valitsa Beach is roughly 1.4 miles away. Chrousso Beach is around 1.7 miles away, and Golden Beach about 2.5 miles away. The nearby Porto Valitsa bar is also about 1.4 miles away, while Fish Tavern Kordelas is roughly 0.3 miles from the resort — close enough to give you another dinner option when you fancy eating elsewhere.

For a little history, Ancient Neapolis is about 10 miles away by road. Thessaloniki Airport is around 65 miles away, and the hotel can arrange an airport shuttle. Free parking is available on site, which is useful if you are exploring the peninsula under your own steam.

The room choice is fairly easy to read. For two people, the Deluxe Room is the straightforward couples' option, with a super-king-size bed, private bathroom and balcony. If three people are sharing, the Deluxe King Room adds a single bed beside the super-king-size bed; that is the one to look at when a third occupant matters more than having acres of floor space.

Every room has air conditioning, a refrigerator, free WiFi and a television. The refrigerator earns its keep when you return hot, thirsty and no longer interested in the theory that water tastes better at room temperature. Soundproofing is also part of the room specification, while the tiled or marble floor should be easy to live with after a day at the beach.

Balconies and terraces come with outdoor furniture, and the views are described as city or landmark views rather than a guaranteed sea panorama. Bathrooms are private and include a shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so that is worth factoring in if carrying luggage upstairs is less appealing than it used to be.

All-inclusive is the stated board arrangement, with a buffet breakfast to start the day. The Main Restaurant covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving international dishes in an open-air setting. That gives you the useful option of eating without leaving the resort, whether you are hungry enough for a full plate or simply want to get fed and carry on with the afternoon.

Dinner can also move to the A la Carte Restaurant, where Mediterranean cooking is served on a terrace. The setting brings the sea into the evening rather than trapping you in an enclosed dining room, and the dress code is smart casual — in other words, beachwear has had its innings.

There are two named bars. The Pool Bar serves cocktails and snacks beside the main pool, while the Lobby Bar is the place for drinks away from the water. Room service runs around the clock, and the hotel also has an on-site coffee house. Wine and champagne are available, as are fruit options, and there is a restaurant on site for the evenings when your legs have had quite enough of walking.

The main pool is outdoors, large and fitted with a swim-up bar, which may be all the argument required after a warm day by the sea. A separate children's pool keeps the family arrangements simple. The direct beach adds sun loungers and parasols, so you can choose between a strip of golden sand and a proper poolside retreat without going far.

For the more deliberate form of recovery, the Spa & Wellness Center offers massages, facial treatments, body wraps and a sauna. There is also a gym and the option of joining a yoga class. None of this demands a heroic commitment: a massage, a short swim and a horizontal afternoon are all perfectly respectable uses of a holiday.

When you and your companion need to move rather than melt, the resort offers kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling, boat excursions and equipment hire. Sightseeing tours provide a change of scenery on land, while live music gives the evening a little structure. Families have a kids' club, children's activities, babysitting and a children's menu; couples can simply ignore all of that and head for the terrace.

The hotel can arrange an airport transfer, either privately or as a shared shuttle, to be booked with the property. Thessaloniki Airport is about 65 miles away. If you are driving, free public parking is available on site and does not require a reservation; car hire can also be arranged.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 22:30, and check-out from 08:00 to 11:00. The minimum age for check-in is 18. Children of any age are welcome, with cots available for children aged 0 to 2 on request; extra beds are not available. Pets are not allowed.

WiFi is free throughout the hotel, and daily housekeeping, luggage storage, a concierge and a reception safe are available. Laundry and dry-cleaning services are also offered, while a doctor can be arranged on request. The hotel accepts cash, Visa and Mastercard. Upper floors are accessible by stairs only, a small detail that becomes rather less small when you have luggage in both hands.
