Snoopy Island, Fujairah: Easy Reef Diving

Snoopy Island is an easily identifiable landmark off Al Aqah, presenting itself as a small rocky outcrop. The dive site wraps around this islet, forming a gentle reef system rather than a dramatic drop-off. You'll find a varied underwater landscape here, shifting between shallow coral gardens, modest rocky slopes, and interspersed sandy patches, creating distinct micro-habitats for different species. This varied topography, coupled with its sheltered position, makes for a relaxed dive profile where you can spend ample time exploring the different zones.

Entry to Snoopy Island is primarily from the shore at Al Aqah or Sandy Beach, offering a direct swim out to the reef. For those who prefer, a very short boat ride, typically no more than five minutes from Sandy Beach, also provides access. This close proximity to shore means you can often set your own pace, moving from the shallowest, sunlit areas where snorkelers frequent, to the slightly deeper reef sections that are still well within recreational dive limits. The convenience of access contributes significantly to its reputation as an approachable site.

Below the surface, the reef presents a surprising density of marine life for such a shallow, accessible location. You'll encounter a variety of hard and soft corals that host a typical reef community. Look closely among the coral formations and rocky crevices for moray eels and the distinct shapes of cuttlefish. The schooling fish here include parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, clownfish, sergeant major fish, and trumpetfish, adding constant movement and colour to the scene.

Beyond the smaller reef residents, Snoopy Island frequently hosts larger visitors. It's a reliable spot to encounter green turtles and hawksbill turtles, often seen grazing on the corals or resting on the sandy bottom. While not an open ocean dive, the occasional presence of blacktip reef sharks in the slightly deeper areas underscores the health of this reef system. Keep an eye out for rays, which can be found cruising over the sandy sections, and octopuses tucked away in their rocky lairs.

The conditions at Snoopy Island are generally benign, with light current being the norm, consistent with its sheltered, shallow profile. Visibility typically ranges between 8 and 20 metres, providing clear views of the reef structure and its inhabitants. The best diving conditions, with cooler water and often improved visibility, are generally found from September through May, allowing for comfortable, extended bottom times.
