Rainbow Passage, Taveuni: Drift Diving Fiji's Somosomo Strait

Dropping into Rainbow Passage, you'll immediately feel the current, a defining characteristic of many dives in Taveuni's Somosomo Strait. This site is typically approached as a drift dive, with your guide assessing the current's direction and strength to determine your trajectory. You'll descend into deeper water, allowing the flow to carry you smoothly along the reef's contours, ensuring you cover a significant stretch of this biodiverse environment.

The topography here is a gently sloping reef, a continuous landscape teeming with activity. As you drift, the sheer volume of fish life becomes apparent; schools of anthias and fusiliers move in synchronized patterns, forming living curtains that part and reform as you pass. This inner section of Rainbow Reef is particularly renowned for its 'explosion' of soft corals, fueled by the nutrient-rich tidal currents that sweep through the Somosomo Strait, creating a truly vibrant display.

Among the dense coral formations and rocky outcrops, dedicated observation can reveal some truly unique residents. Keep your eyes peeled for the striking juvenile blue ribbon eels (Rhinomuraena quaesita), their slender electric blue bodies contrasting sharply with the reef. You might also spot the camouflaged leaf scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus), masters of disguise, swaying almost imperceptibly with the gentle surge, blending seamlessly with their surroundings.

Beyond the abundant fish and intriguing macro life, Rainbow Passage is known for its graceful banded sea snakes (Laticauda colubrina). The best overall visibility and conditions for Rainbow Reef sites are generally found during the dry season, from June to October. Water temperatures are consistently warm, typically ranging between 24 and 30°C, offering comfortable diving year-round.
