The Corner, Taveuni: Reef Diving in Fiji

The Corner is aptly named for its position, situated across from Annie's Bommie, where the reef takes a distinct turn. As you descend, you find yourself on a gently sloping reef, a vibrant tapestry of hard corals that stretches out before you. The profile here allows for a relaxed navigation, letting you absorb the sheer volume of marine life that thrives in this dynamic environment.

Your dive here unfolds along this soft slope, a path teeming with activity. Schools of fusiliers cascade like living ribbons, their movements synchronized against the blue. Surgeonfish and parrotfish add bursts of colour, diligently grazing on the reef, their presence a constant reminder of the health of this ecosystem. It's a swim-through experience where the reef's inhabitants are very much a part of your journey.

Midway through the dive, your trajectory will lead you to a larger coral bommie, a central feature within a deeper sandy flat adjacent to the main reef. This bommie serves as a focal point, drawing in a variety of creatures. It's common to spot whitetip reef sharks resting on the sand here, their calm demeanor offering a unique photo opportunity without disturbing their peace.

Depending on the pace of your exploration, you'll make your way to the other side of the reef, an area known for potential encounters beyond the typical reef inhabitants. This stretch is where you might drift gently with any prevailing current, and it's here that hawksbill turtles are occasionally sighted, moving gracefully through the water column, adding an element of serene beauty to the dive.

Beyond the larger spectacles, The Corner truly shines with its smaller, intricate life. The healthy hard corals provide a perfect habitat for a host of macro subjects. Keep an eye out for juvenile blue ribbon eels, their vibrant colours contrasting with the reefscape, and a surprising array of flatworms and nudibranchs, each a miniature artwork waiting to be discovered by the observant diver.
