The centre operates with a deep commitment to ocean education and ethical practices. As partners with PADI Aware, Shark Project, and Green Fins, the focus here is as much on protecting the marine ecosystem as it is on exploring it. Whether you are here for the annual Sardine Run or for deep reef explorations, the approach is always rooted in conservation.

The centre is a PADI 5 Star facility and holds the distinction of being the only PADI Instructor Development Centre (IDC) in the Shelly Beach area. It is led by Nina Link, one of the rare PADI Course Directors in the world, alongside an experienced team including Paul Mundel, James Chapman, and Bradley Koekemoer. This leadership brings decades of combined experience specifically on the Protea Banks.

Instruction is delivered in English and German. The team emphasises small-group mentorship and maintains strict safety protocols, including the use of GPS tracking for all divers during excursions. This high level of oversight ensures that even in the challenging conditions often found at Protea Banks, safety remains the priority.

As an IDC, the centre offers the full spectrum of PADI training. You can begin with Discover Scuba Diving or the Open Water Diver course and progress through Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster levels.

Specialised training is also available, including the PADI Adventure Diver course, Emergency First Responder, and various PADI Specialty courses. For those looking to turn professional, the centre provides the path through to PADI Pro status and instructor training.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit, including soft gear and hard gear, to ensure you have everything required for your dives. On-site facilities include dedicated rinsing stations and secure storage for your own equipment.

For those choosing the 'Stay & Dive' option, accommodation is available at The Lookout Guesthouse. This solar-powered facility features eight double rooms with en-suite bathrooms, a heated pool, and a relaxing outdoor space designed for divers to unwind between sessions.

The Protea Banks is a powerhouse of biodiversity, particularly for those interested in large pelagics. You can expect to encounter a wide array of sharks, including Tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), bull sharks, hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini), and blue sharks. Other frequent visitors include nurse sharks, dusky sharks, and whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus).

Beyond sharks, the area is home to large predatory fish, rays (Batoidea), and various species of dolphins and whales. You may also see sea turtles, large groupers (Epinephelus), and tuna (Thunnus) patrolling the reef. The annual Sardine Run brings even more activity to the water, drawing massive numbers of marine life.

For those who prefer the smaller details, the reef hosts a variety of life including scorpionfish, moray eels (Muraenidae), and various species of wrasse (Labridae). You can find diverse life such as crabs, sea turtles, and various tropical fish amongst the structures of the reef.

Fixed life on the reef provides a vibrant backdrop to the action, with various corals and sponges forming the complex architecture of the Banks. This habitat supports a massive ecosystem of smaller organisms that keep the reef thriving.

Protea Banks is a challenging environment known for its strong currents. Divers should be prepared for moving water and should ideally possess advanced certification to manage the conditions effectively.

Visibility is highly variable depending on the season and local conditions, ranging from 5 metres to 40 metres. The water temperature typically ranges between 19°C and 26°C.
