Scuba Blue Zanzibar

Located in Pwani Mchangani on the east coast of Zanzibar, Scuba Blue Zanzibar offers a boutique diving experience rooted in the local community. Founded in late 2019 by locals from Matemwe, the centre combines professional standards with deep-seated knowledge of the surrounding waters.

The centre operates as an IDC Centre, providing high-quality instruction through both PADI and SSI affiliations. Whether you are looking to start your training or are an experienced diver seeking the reefs of the Indian Ocean, the team provides a professional environment for every excursion.

The team is composed of experienced professionals who have spent decades diving these specific waters. Having grown up with the Zanzibar reefs, the instructors bring a level of local expertise and environmental understanding that is central to the centre's identity.

As an IDC Centre, the facility is equipped to handle a wide range of training requirements. The team operates with a focus on small groups to ensure a personalised experience for every diver on board.

Scuba Blue Zanzibar offers a comprehensive range of training through PADI and SSI. For those new to the water, courses include Discover Scuba Diving and the Bubble Maker programme, leading through the Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver levels.

Advanced training is also available for divers looking to expand their skills, including Open Water Upgrade, Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver, and Rescue Diver. The centre also provides EFR (Emergency First Response) training and Enriched Air (Nitrox) certifications.

The centre operates a fleet of custom-built diving boats. These vessels are powered by 40hp motors and are specifically designed to facilitate daily diving and snorkelling trips.

Nitrox is available for use on these boats, allowing divers to extend their bottom times during reef excursions.

The centre provides various facilities for divers on shore. For those requiring specific kit, prescription masks are available for hire.

Safety is a priority, with the centre being a DAN safety partner. For any emergency requirements, a hyperbaric chamber is located in Stone Town, approximately 45 minutes away by road.

The reefs are home to a vast array of tropical fish, including schools of colourful reef fish, snappers (Lutjanidae), and various species of butterflyfish (Chaetodon). You will regularly encounter angelfish (Pomacanthidae), surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), and parrotfish (Calotomus) navigating the coral structures.

Larger pelagics and predators frequent the area, including various species of trevally, bluefin trevally (Caranx melampygus), and barracuda (Sphyraena). Divers may also spot whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), stingrays (Myliobatiformes), and various species of tuna (Thunnus) passing through the water column.

For those interested in macro life, the seabed offers plenty of detail. Look for octopus (Octopoda), various species of shrimp including cleaner shrimp (Lysmata), and porcelain crabs. The environment also supports garden eels (Heterocongrinae), seahorses (Hippocampus), and various species of scorpionfish and stonefish.

The reef structure itself is built upon a foundation of soft corals and various reef fish habitats, providing a complex landscape for species such as moray eels (Muraenidae), groupers (Epinephelinae), and triggerfish (Balistidae).

The centre organises daily diving and snorkelling trips. Divers should be aware that the local environment is subject to the natural rhythms of the Indian Ocean, though specific current and swell data for the Pwani Mchangani area is managed on a trip-by-trip basis by the guides.
