Galapagos Dive Academy

Situated on Santa Cruz Island near Puerto Ayora, Galapagos Dive Academy serves as a professional hub for divers looking to explore the unique ecosystems of the Galapagos. The centre is strategically located just 10 metres from the DAN decompression chamber, providing an added layer of security for those diving in the region.

The academy is led by Claudia and Juan-Carlos, bringing more than 50 years of collective experience to the local diving industry. This depth of knowledge ensures that whether you are a beginner or a professional, you are learning from seasoned experts.

The team is highly qualified, offering instruction through both PADI and SSI frameworks. They are equipped to handle everything from basic beginner training to advanced professional support, including specialized services for international film and research teams.

The academy offers a comprehensive range of certifications through both PADI and SSI. For those just starting, you can complete your initial training in the calm, shallow waters of Academy Bay.

For more advanced divers, the centre provides courses such as Divemaster and Rescue Diver. They also offer specialised training including PADI Freedive Instructor and various instructor-level courses to help you progress through the professional ranks.

The centre operates a diving platform (NINA) designed to provide a stable base for your excursions. This vessel is specifically suited for the local conditions, allowing you to focus on your buoyancy and surroundings rather than the movement of the boat.

In the open water, you can expect to encounter various sharks, including whitetip sharks and Galapagos sharks. You will also see several species of rays, such as stingrays and Mobula rays (Mobula alfredi), alongside various snapper species (Lutjanidae).

Large pelagics and schooling fish are a regular feature of the area, including Tuna (Thunnus), Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri), and Jack (Carangidae). You may also spot Barracuda (Sphyraena) or various species of Hammerhead sharks (Sphyrnidae) patrolling the water column.

For those looking for smaller details, the reef environment supports a diverse array of life including Triggerfish (Balistidae), Pufferfish (Arothron hispidus), and various species of Moray eel (Muraenidae).

Diving in the open ocean can be demanding, as the blue water sites can present very challenging currents. It is important to assess your skill level before heading into these more exposed environments.
