One Finger Rock, Portsmouth: Dominica's Plateau to Wall Dive

Dropping into One Finger Rock, you'll immediately find yourself gliding over a beautiful flat plateau, resting comfortably at an average depth of 12 meters. This initial section of the dive site is a mosaic of soft sands, vibrant sponges, and intricate coral formations, creating a rich texture on the seabed. The gentle contours of this upper reef are home to a myriad of smaller reef life, a warm-up for the deeper exploration to come, allowing you to settle into the dive and adjust your buoyancy with ease.

The plateau gradually transitions, then sharply descends, transforming into a dramatic drop-off that plunges down to 36 meters. This change in topography provides a sense of entering a new realm, as the light shifts and the scale of the underwater landscape expands. The descent along this wall reveals a continuation of the sandy bottom at its base, interspersed with significant patches of health corals that cling to the deeper sections of the reef.

Below 30 meters, the deeper reaches of One Finger Rock truly come alive. Here, the larger coral structures provide shelter and sustenance for an overwhelming abundance of marine life. Among the countless fish inhabiting these deeper sections, the presence of very large vivaneaux, or snappers (Lutjanidae), is particularly notable.
