Casa da Baia is a small guest house in the historic centre of Horta, built from a rebuilt house that keeps its original architectural character while adding the practical comforts you want at the end of a day outdoors. There are eight rooms, all with private bathrooms, plus a shared lounge, kitchen and terrace for guests to use.

The atmosphere is sociable without turning into a resort performance. You can sit in the lounge with a book about the Azores, take your breakfast in the shared kitchen or step outside for the view across Horta Bay. English, Portuguese, French and German are spoken by the hotel team, so you can discuss the useful things clearly, whether that means arrival arrangements, a late question over breakfast or where to find dinner.

This suits you if you prefer a well-placed base with character and shared spaces rather than a large property built around facilities. The house is close to the marina, local businesses and restaurants, so the evening does not depend on whatever happens to be happening inside the building.

You are in Horta, Portugal, on Faial, with the house facing Horta Marina and the sea. Peter’s Café Sport is next door, while the marina’s painted walls, maritime companies and working harbour are part of the immediate surroundings rather than a day trip. The centre of town is already under your feet.

Praia de Porto Pim is about 500 metres away by the property’s location data and described as less than 1 km from the house. It is the nearest beach, with calm water, walking trails, an aquarium, the former Whale Factory and the Dabney family house nearby. Praia da Conceição is about 1.5 km away, and Praia do Almoxarife is about 3 km away.

For a stroll with a little more scenery, the protected landscape of Monte da Guia is about 500 metres away. Horta’s cafés, bars and local shops are close at hand, including Clube Naval da Horta around 50 metres away and Restaurante Varanda da Horta within roughly 300 metres. The seafront Avenida 25 de Abril is a five-minute walk from the house.

The sea-view rooms are the obvious choice if you want the Azores to remain part of the day after you have shut the door. Depending on the room, you may look across the water towards Pico and its mountain, with sunrise providing a rather more convincing alarm clock than a phone. The Deluxe Double Room with Sea View gives you more room to spread out than the standard double, while the twin room with an extra bed is the practical option for three people travelling together.

For a couple, a sea-view double keeps things simple: private bathroom, air conditioning, wardrobe space and the prospect of waking to the bay. For a solo diver, the single room has its own private bathroom and avoids paying for space you will not use. Every room has bed linen, a clothes rack and a socket near the bed, while bathrooms include a shower or bath, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer.

Air conditioning and heating cover the less predictable side of island weather. A mosquito net is also available, which is the sort of small detail you appreciate when you are tired, warm and trying not to conduct a midnight wildlife survey. The house is non-smoking throughout, and quiet hours run from 23:00 to 07:00.

Breakfast is included and served in the shared kitchen as a continental buffet built around local products. It is a useful start rather than a grand dining ritual: enough to get you moving, with the advantage that the kitchen remains available when you want to prepare something yourself later.

That shared kitchen comes equipped for guest meals, so you can keep food simple, make a packed lunch or avoid the formalities of finding a table every evening. There is no room service. A coffee house is available on site, and fruit is provided as part of the food and drink facilities.

For dinner and drinks, the location does the heavy lifting. Restaurants, cafés and bars sit around the marina, with Clube Naval da Horta almost next door and Gelados do Atlântico only a short walk away. Hospedaria J. S. F. is also nearby, while Bico Doce is roughly 1 km from the house. You can eat out without turning the return journey into a second excursion.

The terrace is the main place to decompress: outdoor furniture, a sun terrace and a view over Horta Bay give you somewhere to sit when your legs have had enough of walking but your day is not quite ready to end. The shared lounge adds sofas, cable television and a small reading area with books on the nature and culture of the Azores.

Horta is easy to explore on foot, and the surrounding island gives you plenty of reasons to put your shoes back on. Hiking, cultural excursions and wildlife observation are available, with visits to the Capelinhos volcano and the Caldeira of Faial among the activities offered. Walking tours and bike tours are also available, and bicycles can be hired.

If you are travelling with family, there is an indoor play area and board games and puzzles. The house welcomes children, and extra beds or cots can be requested. For a quieter evening, the marina, the bay and the terrace offer a better soundtrack than a programme of organised entertainment.

Horta Airport is about 7 miles from the guest house, around ten minutes by car. An airport shuttle service is available to arrange with the property, and car hire is also available. The Maritime Terminal is about five minutes away, giving you access to boat connections to other islands in the archipelago, including Pico and São Jorge.

Check-in starts at 14:00, with your expected arrival time to be arranged in advance. Check-out runs from 07:00 to 11:00. You will need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, while luggage storage is available if your travel times do not line up neatly with the room.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Nearby public street parking is free, although spaces cannot be reserved. Laundry is available for an additional charge, and upper floors are reached by stairs only. Smoking and pets are not allowed, parties are not permitted, and the house keeps quiet hours from 23:00 to 07:00.
