Shark Dive about the site

The Shark Dive off Faial is not a reef dive or a wall exploration; it’s an immersive, full-ocean experience where the vast blue is your horizon. Away from any fixed structure, the boat serves as your point of reference, drifting with the currents as you prepare for an encounter with the ocean's apex predators. This is a dive designed to bring you face-to-face with blue sharks (Prionace glauca) in their natural pelagic environment, a truly unique opportunity in the Atlantic.

Upon reaching the designated area, a bait box is deployed, strategically placed to attract blue sharks. You'll enter the water and position yourself between the surface and a maximum depth of 10 meters, always staying close to the boat. Depending on the conditions and the dive operator's protocol, you may be attached to a safety line, a measure that ensures you remain connected to the vessel even with potentially strong currents at play. This shallow depth keeps you in the optimal zone for visibility and interaction with these magnificent creatures.

The experience unfolds in the open ocean, which means you are floating in the vast expanse of the Atlantic, far from any land features. This 'blue water' environment offers uninterrupted views of the sharks as they approach. Blue sharks are graceful and curious, often making close passes. Observing their sleek forms and fluid movements in the deep blue is a profound experience, highlighting the beauty and power of these oceanic hunters.

This activity is highly seasonal, with the best encounters occurring from July to September, aligning with the migratory patterns of target species. The dynamic nature of the open ocean means that while the core experience is consistent, each dive offers unique interactions. You are a visitor in their world, observing their natural behavior as they investigate the bait, circle the boat, and patrol their expansive hunting grounds.

Successful participation in the Shark Dive requires more than just certification; it demands a readiness for open-water conditions and a deep respect for marine life. The prerequisite 'check dive' ensures that you are comfortable and proficient in the water, able to handle the unique demands of this type of deep blue encounter. This preparation ensures a safe and rewarding experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the privilege of diving alongside the blue sharks of Faial.
