You are in Horta, on Faial, Portugal, on the town's main street and directly by the sea. The hotel faces the harbour, with views across the ocean towards Pico Mountain. Praia de Porto Pim is about 300 metres away, so a swim or a walk beside the water is close enough to require no expeditionary planning.

Horta Marina is about a ten-minute walk away, placing boats, waterfront walks and the working harbour within an easy stroll. Peter's Café Sport is just a few metres from the hotel, a famous stop for sailors and Atlantic navigators. In other words, the nautical atmosphere is not confined to the lobby; it continues as soon as you step outside.

You also have several places to eat nearby, including Canto da Doca and Trigo Azul within a few minutes on foot, while Café da Marina and nearby bars give you alternatives when the hotel's table is not quite what you fancy. Monte da Guia's protected landscape area is roughly 300 metres away, adding a nearby change of scenery to the harbour view.

The room choice is mainly about how you want to use the space and what you want to see when you open the curtains. Standard rooms suit two people travelling light, while the room with an extra bed gives you more room to manoeuvre if you are travelling with a third person. The view is the practical difference worth paying attention to here: ocean and Pico-facing rooms turn the start and end of the day into part of the trip, while the more straightforward option keeps things simple and functional.

Inside, modern wooden furnishings keep the maritime feel under control, and the rooms come with air conditioning, soundproofing, a private bathroom, shower or bath, toiletries and a hairdryer. A minibar and tea and coffee-making facilities cover the return from a long day, while the television, cable channels and free WiFi handle the quieter hours. Daily housekeeping, room service and luggage storage make the stay easier when your timetable is dictated by tides, boats and the condition of your knees.

Clipper Restaurante gives you the useful luxury of eating in without sacrificing the location. It serves all-day dining and focuses on Azorean and regional specialities, using local ingredients and combining traditional cooking with a more contemporary approach. The room looks towards the ocean and Pico Mountain, with nautical details that fit Horta rather better than generic blue-and-white seaside décor ever could.

Breakfast is included and comes in continental, American and buffet formats. That gives you enough range for an early start, whether you prefer something substantial before heading out or a quieter plate with coffee while the harbour wakes up. Breakfast can also be served in your room, which is a sensible option when the day starts earlier than your enthusiasm.

It serves coffee and has newspapers, alongside light-meal menus and gin menus for the part of the evening when discussing currents has given way to discussing botanicals. A snack bar, minibar, fruit and special-diet menus on request add useful flexibility, while wine and champagne are also available.

A fitness centre is available if you prefer movement to steam. It is not a substitute for an island walk, but it gives you somewhere to stretch and keep a routine when the weather is unhelpful. Billiards, the shared lounge and games room are better suited to a slow afternoon or an evening when the Atlantic has made its point.

Faial also gives you several ways to fill a non-diving day: hiking, wildlife observation, cultural excursions, boat trips, volcano visits and whale watching. Vineyard visits on Pico are another possibility. The hotel is positioned in Horta rather than isolated from the island, so you can use it as a comfortable starting point for exploring rather than spending the whole stay negotiating resort logistics.

Horta Airport is about 4.8 miles from the hotel, with a drive of around ten minutes. Car hire can be arranged through the 24-hour reception, which is useful on Faial if you want to reach viewpoints, volcanic landscapes and more distant parts of the island at your own pace. Free parking is available on site, although spaces cannot be reserved.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 00:00 and check-out from 07:00 to 12:00. You need to give the hotel your expected arrival time, and you will need photo identification and a credit card at check-in. The minimum age for checking in is 18. Cash is accepted, and luggage storage is available if your travel schedule leaves a gap between arrival, departure and the room.
