Underwater Archaeological Park, Terceira: Angra do Heroísmo's submerged history

Diving the Underwater Archaeological Park in Angra do Heroísmo offers a different kind of immersion than many other Azorean sites. Rather than a boat ride to an exposed seamount, your journey begins in a sheltered bay on Terceira’s south coast. This designated park, Portugal’s first of its kind, preserves a significant concentration of underwater cultural heritage, transforming the seabed into an open-air museum. You'll follow a marked circuit, starting from a large anchor on a gentle slope and progressing through various historical artefacts.

The primary focus of this site is the 'Cemetery of Anchors', an area featuring more than 40 historic anchors scattered across the seabed. These anchors, some over three metres long, date from the 15th to the 19th centuries, telling a silent story of centuries of maritime activity in the bay. As you fin along the trail, you'll observe how these relics have integrated with the marine environment, providing shelter and substrate for various forms of life. The gradual slope allows for a progressive exploration, revealing new details with each metre of descent.

Beyond the anchors, the park also encompasses the wreck of the steamer Lidador, which sank in 1878. This 19th-century vessel adds another layer to the historical narrative, offering a different type of submerged structure to explore. While the Lidador wreck is shallower, making it accessible for less experienced divers, the full circuit of the Cemetery of Anchors extends deeper, allowing for a more comprehensive appreciation of the site's historical significance and its interaction with the marine ecosystem.

The dive profile at the Cemetery of Anchors takes you along a vertical wall before finishing on a sandy seabed. This varied topography provides different habitats for marine life. While the historical artefacts are the main draw, you might encounter Atlantic barracuda, stingrays, or slipper lobsters camouflaged against the rocks or sand. Various small reef fish also inhabit the crevices and structures, adding a dynamic element to the historical backdrop.

Visibility at the site can reach up to 20 to 30 metres, offering clear views of the extensive collection of anchors and the wreck. The sheltered nature of Angra do Heroísmo Bay means that currents are generally light and manageable, making for a relaxed and contemplative dive. This allows ample time for careful observation and photography, ensuring you can fully appreciate the intricate details of the historical remains and the marine life that now calls them home.

Access to the park is typically by a short boat ride from Angra do Heroísmo harbour or marina, with the Cemetery of Anchors trail marked by two yellow buoys.
