Entre Montes, Terceira: Volcanic Slopes and Ray Nurseries

Descending into Entre Montes, you immediately notice the distinctive volcanic topography. The site is characterized by a gentle slope, stretching from a shallow 5 meters down to 20 meters, covered with an intriguing mix of large volcanic rocks and soft sand. This unique geological formation creates a diverse environment, offering shelter and foraging grounds for a variety of marine life. As you glide over the sand, keep a keen eye on the shapes outlined beneath you, especially where the rocky outcrops meet the sandy floor.

One of the most compelling features of Entre Montes is its role as a nursery area for common stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca). These graceful creatures often rest partially buried in the sand or glide effortlessly over the bottom, a testament to the site's rich biodiversity and protected nature.
