For a change of beach, Pozo Beach is roughly 300 metres away and Playa de Los Monjas about half a mile away. Charco Verde Beach and Bombilla Beach are both around 1 mile away, giving you a few alternatives when you fancy a different stretch of coast rather than another lap of the same pool.

The island’s inland scenery is within reach by car. Parque Conrado Hernández is about 7 miles away, and Caldera de Taburiente National Park about 9 miles away. La Palma Airport is around 20 miles away by road, with a listed driving time of about 39 minutes.

Cape Nao is the one to pick when you want the ocean beside the plate; La Hacienda breaks up the buffet routine without requiring a taxi into town.

Two named bars cover the main drinking situations. O’Lula Pool Club is the pool bar, serving premium drinks while you stay in the sun, and Boreal Lobby Bar is the indoor option for a chat, a book or a slower drink. The hotel also has a minibar in the rooms, useful when your timing is governed by dive boats rather than restaurant clocks.

The pool area has one heated pool for all ages and a separate children’s pool, both with sea views. The heated pool was built around a 1949 volcanic lava flow, which is a more convincing talking point than the usual shaped-tile statistics. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas, a sun terrace and outdoor furniture give you several places to stop moving for a while.

If lying still becomes too ambitious, the fitness and wellness programme includes a gym with modern equipment, yoga, fit-balance and stretching. These are the sort of activities that can work around a diving schedule: enough movement to unknot the shoulders, without pretending that anyone needs an Olympic training plan after a morning underwater.

For days away from the hotel, excursions cover Santa Cruz, Caldera de Taburiente, Los Tilos, Salinas and Fuencaliente lighthouse. The hotel also offers access to hiking activities away from the property, while bike hire is available for exploring the island.
