Tiliarte Wreck, Boa Vista: shallow fishing boat exploration

Tiliarte, sometimes known as Taliarte, is a distinct dive site in Boa Vista, centred around a former fishing boat. The wreck itself lies in relatively shallow water, with depths ranging from 6 to 10 metres. It’s not a vast structure, but its defined shape provides a clear focal point for the dive. You descend directly onto the wreck, which is largely intact and accessible, allowing for circumnavigation and close inspection without venturing into complex overhead environments.

The topography is straightforward, designed for ease of navigation. You'll spend your time exploring the wreck's exterior and its immediate surroundings on the sandy bottom. This profile makes it a comfortable dive for those still building confidence or for photographers looking for stable conditions. The limited depth means generous bottom time, allowing for a relaxed pace to observe the resident marine life and capture images without feeling rushed.

The wreck acts as a natural aggregation point for a variety of smaller fish species. As you approach, large schools of glassfish (Ambassidae) often shimmer around the structure, creating a dynamic visual experience. White seabream (Diplodus sargus) and Guinean seabream (Diplodus bellottii) are common sights, moving in and out of the wreck’s nooks and crannies. These schools often congregate in specific areas, offering opportunities to observe their behaviour up close.

Beyond the schooling fish, you will also encounter individual reef dwellers making the Tiliarte wreck their home. Sergeant majors (Abudefduf saxatilis), doctorfish (Acanthurus chirurgus), and Guinean grunts (Pomadasys jubelini) are frequently present, foraging among the debris and structure. Their predictable presence and relative calmness make them easy subjects for observation, further contributing to the site's appeal for both new divers and those refining their underwater photography skills.

What sets Tiliarte apart in the Boa Vista area is its clear identity as a dedicated wreck dive in the shallows, rather than a reef or an open-water shark site. Its sheltered nature generally keeps the current light, making it a reliable option when other sites might be affected by stronger conditions.
