Possoa, Boa Vista: Pinnacle Reef Diving in Cap-Vert

Possoa, also known as Possona, presents itself as a series of volcanic reef pinnacles emerging from the seabed, starting at a minimum depth of 8 metres. As you descend, these structures extend down to around 25 to 30 metres. The topography includes channels and gaps that form natural swim-throughs between rock formations, allowing you to explore the reef's structure intimately. Hard coral formations are prominent, covering the tops and sides of these pinnacles, providing a rich habitat for resident marine life.

The site acts as a natural corridor, often referred to as a pelagic highway, connecting the open Atlantic waters with the coastal zone of Boa Vista. This positioning means you should anticipate encountering pelagic species moving along the edges of the pinnacles. While the current can be variable, it’s often more noticeable in these exposed areas and around the upwelling zones created by the reef structures. Maintaining good buoyancy and situational awareness is key here to fully appreciate the passing marine life.

One distinct feature of Possoa is a deeper section often called 'Possona Deep' or 'Possona Hole.' This area includes coral-covered walls and a specific hole or feature that adds another dimension to the dive. The transition from the shallower pinnacles to these deeper structures provides varying light and current conditions, influencing the types of fauna you might encounter at different depths. This deeper section extends the exploration for those comfortable with the depth and potential for increased water movement.

Visibility at Possoa typically ranges from 15 to 40 metres, though it can vary with the Atlantic weather and season. During late summer, specifically August and September, conditions often bring clearer water and calmer seas, enhancing the visual experience. Conversely, periods of rougher weather can lead to reduced visibility and more significant water movement, making the dive more dynamic and demanding, especially on the more exposed parts of the reef.

The rich hard coral coverage supports a diverse range of reef inhabitants. You'll observe moray eels tucked into crevices, various groupers, and yellowtail snapper schooling around the reef structures. Jacks are also common, often moving in small groups near the pinnacles. These resident species provide a constant backdrop of activity, complementing the occasional presence of larger pelagics moving through the area.

Possoa is known for its pelagic traffic. Encounters with green turtles and eagle rays are frequent, often seen gliding past the pinnacles. Grey reef sharks and nurse sharks are also part of the regular marine life here, providing opportunities for observation in their natural environment. There’s always the chance of spotting manta rays or even dolphins moving through the deeper blue, particularly when currents are bringing nutrients through the site.
