Niva Kuramathi Maldives

Kuramathi is a substantial island resort rather than a small hideaway, with beach bungalows, garden and beach villas, overwater accommodation, several pools and enough restaurants and bars to keep your evenings from becoming a daily debate about the same buffet. The setting does the talking without needing much assistance: sand underfoot, greenery inland and the lagoon beyond it.

You can keep the day as active or as idle as you like. Walk the island, settle on a sun lounger, book time at LIME Wellbeing or head for the water. Couples have the choice of overwater villas, private pools and open-air dining, while families have a children’s club, supervised activities and babysitting. It is a place built for different rhythms, which is useful when one person wants another excursion and the other has declared a firm afternoon appointment with a book.

The resort is in Rasdu, in the Maldives, within the North Ari Atoll. You are on the seafront, with reef, forest and a white-sand beach forming the immediate surroundings rather than roads, shops and traffic. The island includes forest trails and a sandbank described as a mile long, so you can stretch your legs without turning the walk into an expedition.

Rasdhoo North Beach is about 300 metres away, while Rashdoo Bikini Beach is about 600 metres away. Lemon Drop restaurant is about 1 mile away. For the airport transfer, Velana International Airport is about 37 miles away as the map measures it, but the useful detail is how you get across the water: a seaplane takes about 20 minutes, while the shared speedboat takes around 75 to 90 minutes.

The choice is mainly about where you want to wake up. Beach and garden accommodation keeps the sand and island greenery close, with the Beach Bungalow offering a straightforward option for a couple or a small group. If you are travelling with family or friends, the Two-Bedroom Beach House is the practical outlier: two bedrooms, two bathrooms and room for up to six guests, rather than making three people negotiate one bathroom and a shrinking patch of floor.

For couples who want the water as part of the room rather than merely the view, the water villas and pool villas move the emphasis offshore. The Water Villa with Pool and the Thundi Water Villa with Pool both add a private pool, while the Honeymoon Pool Villa pairs its garden setting with a private lap pool. The latter is a particularly specific choice: less about spreading out and more about having your own tucked-away swimming spot.

Whichever category you choose, the useful post-dive basics are in place. Villas are air-conditioned and also have a fan, minibar, safe, television, DVD player and iPod docking station; some add an espresso machine and some have a spa bath. Outdoor furniture gives you somewhere to sit when you have dried off, while the private setting of the beach and overwater options lets you retreat without needing to join the rest of the island straight away.

Food is a major part of the proposition here, with an all-inclusive plan and three open-air buffet restaurants serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Haruge, Malaafaiy and Farivalhu all run from morning through evening, with breakfast from 7.30 am, lighter lunch choices such as salads and sandwiches, live cooking at breakfast and themed international buffets at dinner. The dress code is relaxed, which is welcome when your hair is still arguing with the salt.

The à la carte side is broad enough to change the tone of the evening. Siam Garden works in a tropical garden with Thai dishes and herbs and greens from the hydroponic garden. The Reef is by the sea, with seafood and grilled wagyu, while Island Barbeque brings seafood, European and Mediterranean cooking together with tableside flambé. La Belle Vie offers French bistro dishes, including vegetarian choices, and Tandoor Mahal focuses on Indian cooking, from biryanis and curries to Thali selections.

For daytime food, Palm serves Mediterranean dishes beneath the palms, Inguru covers lunch and dinner beside the sea, and the Island Coffee Shop handles coffee and light bites until midnight. There are seven bars: beach, pool, sunset, lagoon-view and lounge options, plus the Champagne Loft with more than 40 champagne and sparkling wine labels and the Havana Club Wine & Cigar Bar for cigars, wines, rum cocktails, cognacs and whiskies. This is not the place for a single quiet bar and an early bedtime unless you make a determined effort.

Three main outdoor pools give you alternatives to the lagoon, with further lap pools at the Sports Centre and in selected villas. The beach has sun loungers, and the island’s trails give you a reason to leave the horizontal position occasionally. Tennis, table tennis, darts, football and a fitness centre cover the more energetic options, while yoga, meditation and a yoga pavilion offer a slower form of exercise that does not require pretending to enjoy a treadmill.

LIME Wellbeing is the serious recovery option. Its treatments include massages, facials, body treatments, hands and feet treatments, Ayurvedic rituals, Yoga Nidra meditation and couples’ treatments. The spa also has a hammam, sauna, jacuzzi and hydrotherapy facilities, with treatment rooms in an overwater setting. After a run of dives, a massage or a quiet hour in the relaxation area may prove more useful than another organised activity. A radical idea, perhaps, but your shoulders may support it.

On the water, you can choose snorkelling, paddleboarding, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, fishing, boat excursions, catamaran sailing, dinghy sailing, pedal boats, tubing and a semi-submarine trip. Land-based and evening options include nature walks, cultural excursions to Rasdhoo, live music, traditional music, DJ sets, sand art, bodu beru drummers and cinema under the stars. Families have Bageecha kids’ club for children aged 3 to 12, with supervised activities, a splash pool, outdoor adventures and movie screenings.

Transfers from Velana International Airport are arranged by the resort, either by seaplane or shared speedboat. Seaplanes operate during daylight and take about 20 minutes; shared speedboats run three times daily and take around 75 to 90 minutes. The speedboat departures from Malé are scheduled for flights arriving between 6.00 am and 10.00 am, between 10.00 am and 1.30 pm, and between 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm. Arrivals after 3.30 pm require an overnight stay in Malé before the next available transfer.

For the return journey, speedboats leave Kuramathi at 6.00 am, 9.00 am and 2.30 pm, according to your flight departure time. International flights before 9.00 am cannot be reached from the resort on the same morning. Share your flight details with the resort at least three days before arrival so your transfer can be arranged, and expect a hotel representative to meet you at the airport.

Check-in runs from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm, with check-out from 9.00 am to midday. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort, the front desk is open around the clock, and concierge and currency exchange services are available. Children of any age are welcome; cots can be requested, while extra beds are not available. Pets are not allowed, and the resort accepts payment in US dollars.

Marine conservation sits at the centre of the resort’s environmental work. The programme includes coral restoration, marine education, guided conservation activities, responsible sourcing, waste reduction and partnerships with local communities.

A resident marine biologist leads talks and experiences focused on manta rays, turtles and sharks, including their ecology, the pressures they face and the work intended to protect them. You can also take part in coral framing, tree planting, nature walks and activities linked to global awareness days.

The hydroponic garden has a practical role as well as a culinary one: herbs and greens are used at Siam Garden. It is a useful connection between what grows on the island and what reaches your plate, rather than a decorative sustainability slogan left floating somewhere above the buffet.
