Fish Head, Park Hyatt Maldives: Submerged Plateau & Thila

Diving into Fish Head, you immediately sense the unique topography of this famed Maldivian thila. It's an experience that begins right from the surface, dropping down onto what was once a majestic atoll before its collapse. The site presents a layered dive, inviting you to explore different ecosystems at various depths, making it accessible and rewarding for divers across all experience levels. The reef's plateau, especially in the shallower sections, acts as a primary exploration ground, revealing a mosaic of hard corals and encrusting sponges.

As you descend, the plateau reveals fields of sea anemones, home to vibrant clownfish, which dart amongst the waving tentacles. This shallower part of the reef, keeping you within the comfortable range of less than 12 meters, is a bustling mini-ecosystem in itself, a perfect warm-up before you venture deeper. It’s here that you can take your time to appreciate the intricate details of reef life, from the smallest nudibranch to the various species of angelfish, such as the Emperor angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) and the blue-masked angelfish.

The true drama of Fish Head unfolds as the thila tumbles down to impressive depths of 40 or 50 meters. Along this dramatic drop-off, the underwater scenery shifts, opening up to the vastness of the open ocean. Keep your eyes peeled for the larger residents of these depths: barracudas cruise past in streamlined formations, while javanese moray eels (Gymnothorax javanicus) peer out from their crevices, their powerful forms evident even when partially hidden.
