Ellaidhoo Hausriff, Ari Atoll: Maldives house reef diving

The Ellaidhoo Hausriff is a fringing coral reef that encircles the island, providing direct shore access to a dynamic underwater environment. You'll find eight marked entry and exit points along the granite seawall and beach, placing you just 10 to 25 metres from the reef edge. This immediate proximity allows for flexible dive planning, whether you're exploring independently or with a guide, making it straightforward to manage your dive time and profile.

Once in the water, the reef wall begins almost immediately, dropping steeply to around 25 to 30 metres. This continuous drop-off is rich in intricate structures and numerous overhangs at various depths. These geological features create shadowed recesses that serve as hunting grounds and hiding spots for a diverse array of marine life, inviting close inspection as you navigate along the coral structures. The interplay of light and shadow within these features adds a visual dimension to the dive.

A highlight of the Ellaidhoo Hausriff is a small shipwreck resting on the slope between approximately 24 and 32 metres. This wreck acts as an artificial reef, attracting larger residents such as groupers and nurse sharks. Exploring the wreck adds another layer to the dive, offering a different topography and the chance to observe marine life that congregates around such structures, often including Napoleon wrasse cruising the area.

The sheer density of fish life here is a constant. You'll encounter abundant reef fish, creating a moving tapestry against the coral. Expect to see vivid schools of blue-striped snappers and yellow trumpetfish weaving through the corals. This constant activity ensures there's always something new to observe as you glide along the reef, from the smallest reef dwellers to larger, more transient species.

The Ellaidhoo Hausriff is situated in a current channel of North Ari Atoll, which contributes to its rich biodiversity by bringing pelagic species close to the reef. While currents can vary, this location often provides opportunities to encounter oceanic sharks, including reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks. Mobulas and eagle rays are also known to glide gracefully through the deeper sections, adding an element of anticipation to every dive.

Beyond the sharks and rays, the reef is home to a variety of other notable species. Keep an eye out for barracudas, stingrays, and turtles. Moray eels are commonly found tucked into crevices, while groupers, lobsters, parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, and fusiliers populate the reef, contributing to the vibrant ecosystem. This blend of resident reef dwellers and passing pelagics creates a comprehensive Maldivian dive experience.

The reef's health and vibrancy are evident in its abundant coral and high biodiversity, making it one of the most fish-rich house reefs in the Maldives.
