Samann Grand puts you in the middle of Male City, with 26 rooms, balconies and a choice of ocean or city views. It suits a short stop before or after a liveaboard, a few days of diving around the capital, or a couple who would rather have restaurants and local life outside the door than spend the whole trip behind a resort gate.

The feel is compact and practical, with the Cloud Restaurant above the city and a 24-hour reception to deal with the awkward timings that tend to accompany flights and boats. You also have free WiFi throughout the hotel, air conditioning in the room and a lift for the upper floors. No need to treat the arrival day as a test of character.

The address is on H. Minaan, Roashanee Magu, in Male City, Maldives. Artificial Beach is about 0.2 miles away, while Hulhumale Ferry Terminal is 200 metres from the hotel. That makes the location useful when your plans involve the water, a ferry connection or simply a walk to the shoreline rather than a long transfer across the island.

You are also close to everyday Male rather than an isolated strip of sand. Food Zone is about 150 feet away, with several other cafés and restaurants within roughly 300 feet. Henveiru Park is around 0.3 miles away, Sultan Park about 0.5 miles away, and the National Museum around 0.6 miles away. Republic Square is within about 0.7 miles, so you can turn a post-dive stroll into a small tour of the capital without arranging an expedition.

Velana International Airport is about 1.8 miles away by road, with the journey listed at around three minutes by car. The hotel offers an airport shuttle, so your arrival can be organised before the luggage, passport queue and tropical humidity begin negotiating against you.

The rooms are set up for two, with ocean-view options, balconies and private bathrooms. The choice is mainly about how much room and which bed arrangement you want rather than about finding a miniature apartment. The Deluxe Double with its large bed is the straightforward couple's choice; the larger Super Deluxe Double or one of the suites gives you more breathing space when you have spent the day carrying wet kit, travel bags and the usual collection of objects that somehow multiply between airport and hotel.

A balcony and an ocean view give the evening somewhere to land. You can step outside, let the room cool down around you and look towards the water without having to leave the building. The rooms also have air conditioning, a fan, a minibar, an electric kettle and tea or coffee-making facilities, which covers the practical end of returning hot, thirsty and not especially interested in ceremony.

WiFi is free, and each room has a flat-screen television, wardrobe, desk, clothes rack and a socket near the bed. Daily housekeeping is provided. The private bathrooms include a shower or bath, towels, toiletries, a hairdryer and a bidet, so the post-flight and post-dive routine stays pleasantly unremarkable. Breakfast is a buffet, with continental, American and halal choices. It starts at 07:00, which is useful for an early departure, although the data does not describe a dedicated diver's breakfast or an earlier service. The restaurant's à la carte menu runs from 11:30 to 23:30.

Sultan Park, the National Museum, Republic Square and Henveiru Park are all close enough to make a gentle afternoon without turning it into a full-day operation.

The hotel also arranges excursions on the water: sunset cruises, island hopping, private picnics, snorkelling, night fishing and a range of water sports. Canoeing, paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and jet skiing are available through the activities programme, with several taking place off site. Cycling is also available off site.

For a quieter evening, the room balcony, the rooftop restaurant and the coffee house do most of the work. Live sports broadcasts, themed dinner nights and breakfast in the room add a few easy options when your legs have already filed a formal complaint.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. You must be at least 18 to check in, show photographic identification and a credit card on arrival, and tell the hotel your expected arrival time. Private, express and standard check-in and check-out are available, with luggage storage for the awkward gap between leaving the room and leaving the island.

The reception desk operates around the clock, with currency exchange, a safety deposit box, concierge service and a tour desk. Laundry, dry cleaning and ironing are available, and packed lunches can be arranged. The hotel is wheelchair accessible, with upper floors reached by lift.
