With 220 rooms and villas, this is not a tiny barefoot hideaway where everyone knows your breakfast order by the second morning. It is a full-service resort with several ways to eat, drink and fill a spare afternoon, which suits you if value means having plenty included rather than paying separately every time you fancy a snack or a second coffee.

You are in Meedhoo, Maldives, on a beachfront island in Raa Atoll. The resort has direct access to white sand, with sun loungers and parasols on the beach, while the island is surrounded by sea rather than roads, shops and the usual holiday traffic. In other words, the walk to the water is measured in sandals, not transport connections.

Adaaran Meedhupparu Beach is right beside the resort. Dhigali Maldives Beach is about 3 miles away, Heritance Aarah Beach about 4 miles away and Furaveri Island Beach about 5 miles away. Those are neighbouring island landmarks rather than places you pop out to for a newspaper, so the resort’s own restaurants, bars and activities matter more here than any imaginary stroll into town.

From Velana International Airport, the journey is either a scenic 45-minute seaplane flight or a domestic flight of about 20 minutes followed by a 45-minute speedboat ride. The island is the destination, not a base for exploring a mainland neighbourhood; once you arrive, the sea and the resort set the timetable.

The accommodation works best when you choose it around the way you want to use the island. Beach villas put you close to the sand and give you a terrace with sun loungers, while the sunset-facing options make more sense if the end of the day matters almost as much as the start. There are four bars in the resort’s main count, with additional dedicated venues for Water Villa guests. Halaboli Main Bar carries the evening entertainment, Sunset Bar brings live entertainment around the day’s final light, and the Pool Bar sits in the infinity pool for the sort of drink that involves very little walking. Albino Bar is the specialist option, with a menu of 101 cocktails available under the Indulgence package. The Premium All-Inclusive drinks selection includes alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, cocktails, mocktails, wine, beer, spirits, soft drinks, juices, tea and coffee.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out is by 12:00. You need photo identification and a credit card at arrival, and the resort needs to know your expected arrival time. Cash is not accepted, while currency exchange, a tour desk, a 24-hour front desk and wake-up service are available. Laundry and ironing services are also offered.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort, although the practical value of a connection on an isolated island depends on how much of the day you actually want to spend looking at a screen. The villas are non-smoking and pets are not allowed. Children are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available, so select the room layout around the people travelling with you rather than hoping to rearrange the furniture on arrival.
