An English-speaking team, a small guesthouse feel and a white-sand beach close enough to reach without turning it into an expedition: TME Retreats Dhigurah suits divers who want a straightforward base on an inhabited Maldivian island. You get air conditioning, private bathrooms, WiFi and a place to sit down properly, rather than a resort bubble cut off from island life.

The property opened in 2012 and has 19 rooms across seven categories. Its setting is designed to give you some privacy while keeping the village within walking distance. Couples can keep things simple, while families have room categories built around shared stays and larger sleeping arrangements.

Dhigurah is an inhabited island in the South Ari Atoll of the Maldives. The guesthouse sits a little away from the village, but close enough for you to walk in and see how the island works beyond the hotel gates. That makes the location more useful than a postcard label: you have a beach base, a local village and restaurants within reach.

The sea is just a few metres from the rooms, with direct access to a white-sand beach stretching for more than 3 km. Dhigurah North West Beach is roughly 0.1 miles away, or about a two-minute walk. If you want to eat elsewhere, Hermits is around 0.1 miles away on foot.

For two, the choice is mainly about how much breathing room you want and whether a sea view, balcony or terrace matters to you. The larger double-room options make more sense when you want space around your bags and a proper place to sit; the more compact doubles keep the arrangement simple for a couple who plans to spend most daylight hours outside. Sea views, balconies and terraces feature across the room selection, depending on the category.

Families and friends can choose a quadruple room with a king-size bed alongside single and sofa beds. That is the practical option when everyone needs to sleep under one roof, rather than scattering across separate rooms. All rooms are on the ground or first floor, with a private bathroom, air conditioning, a fan, wardrobe space and a drying rack for clothes.

A refrigerator and minibar help with keeping drinks cold, while soundproofing, a private entrance and a seating area make the return to your room less abrupt after a long day outside. There is also a desk, free WiFi throughout the property, and room service when getting back out feels like an unnecessary extra activity.

The in-house restaurant covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with local, Eastern and Western dishes on the menu. Booking information also lists British, Indian, seafood and Asian cooking, so the table is not tied to one narrow style. Breakfast is continental and included, which gives you a simple start before heading out for the day.

There is one restaurant, along with a snack bar and an on-site coffee house. Free coffee and tea are available in the lobby, a small but useful detail when you want something hot without arranging a full meal. Room service is available, and packed lunches can be prepared for days when your schedule runs beyond the dining room.

Special-diet menus can be arranged, including options for halal, kosher, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free diets. BBQ facilities are also available. The property itself does not serve alcohol, so plan your evening drinks around that rather than discovering it when you are already back from the beach.

The white-sand beach is the obvious place to start, with direct access from the property and outdoor furniture for the slow part of the day. A shared plunge pool is available at the Rihiveli Deluxe bungalow, while pool and beach towels keep the basics covered. For a change of pace, you can use the kayak, try snorkelling or book water-based activities through the property.

There is enough on land to occupy a non-diving afternoon without turning the guesthouse into an entertainment complex: billiards, foosball, outdoor badminton, beach volleyball and karaoke are all available. Bicycle rental, fishing trips and boat excursions give you ways to see more of the island and its surrounding water.

The tour desk can arrange outings such as whale shark safaris, manta-ray snorkelling and half- or full-day snorkelling trips. Special evenings may include boduberu, with local drums, singing and dancing. If you prefer a quieter finish, the shared lounge, garden and terrace give you somewhere to sit with a coffee and let the day wind down.

Arrival from Velana International Airport is by scheduled speedboat ferry or by domestic flight to Maamigili followed by a short boat transfer to Dhigurah. The property can arrange the airport shuttle on request, and an airport representative guides you to the chosen transfer. The airport is roughly 6 miles away as the crow flies, but the journey is by boat or by air and boat, not by road.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. Private and express check-in and check-out are available, alongside a tour desk, currency exchange, a safety deposit box and wake-up service. Laundry and ironing services are available, and children of all ages are welcome; cots can be requested for younger children. Major cards including Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted.
