REEF JUNKIES dive center

Located in Protaras at Capo Greko, Reef Junkies serves as a base for exploring the diverse underwater landscape of Cyprus. The area is defined by its significant wreck diving, including some of the most famous shipwrecks in the Mediterranean, as well as various artificial reefs designed to bolster local marine life.

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the region offers a reliable window for diving throughout much of the calendar. Whether you are looking to complete your first certification or are a seasoned diver seeking to master wreck penetration or sidemount techniques, the centre provides a professional environment for all levels.

The centre is a small, family-run business managed by a couple with more than 10 years of experience in the diving industry. This setup ensures a friendly, professional, and personal approach to every dive and training programme.

Instruction is available in several languages to accommodate international divers, including English, Hungarian, Greek, and German. This multilingual capability makes the centre a practical choice for those travelling through the Mediterranean who prefer technical instruction in their native tongue.

Reef Junkies offers a comprehensive range of training through PADI and SSI affiliations. Beginners can start with the Open Water Diver course, while more experienced divers can progress through Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster levels.

The course catalogue extends into specialised areas, including Nitrox, Deep Diver, and Wreck Diver certifications. For those interested in technical or alternative configurations, they offer Recreational Sidemount, DPV (Diver Propulsion Vehicle) diving, and Decompression procedures. They also provide niche training such as Dry suit diving, Search & Recovery, and Digital Underwater Photography.

The shop serves as a central hub for divers, offering a place to prepare for the day's excursions. Nitrox is available on-site for divers looking to extend their bottom times or manage decompression profiles more effectively.

For those who prefer not to carry their own heavy kit, the centre provides equipment hire. This includes essential items such as regulators, BCDs, and wetsuits, allowing you to travel light to the Protaras coast.

The wrecks and reefs are home to a variety of larger species. You can often encounter schools of fish, including Tuna (Thunnus), Amberjack (Seriola), and various Jacks (Carangidae). Large predators like Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) and Lionfish (Pterois volitans) are also part of the local ecosystem.

In the rocky areas and around the wrecks, you will find many different types of seabream (Sparidae), such as Saddled seabream (Oblada melanura), Gilt-head bream (Sparus aurata), and white seabream. Wrasses (Labridae), including the Mediterranean rainbow wrasse (Coris julis), are common throughout the site.

For those interested in macro life, the area hosts several interesting species. Look out for Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), and Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda). You may also spot various species of squid, Cuttlefish (Sepiidae), and different types of scorpionfish or weevers hiding in the crevices.

Fixed life adds colour to the underwater scenery, with black sponges, golden sponges, and Neptune's beard corals providing structure for smaller inhabitants like shrimp, anemones, and various sea squirts and tube worms.

The diving season in Protaras is long, with suitable conditions available almost all year around. This makes it a reliable destination for divers planning trips outside of the traditional summer months.
