Liberty Wreck, Protaras, Cyprus: An Artificial Reef

The Liberty Wreck is located approximately one kilometre from the shore off Protaras, a short boat ride takes you directly to the site. This 37-meter cargo ship, with an 8 to 10-meter beam, was intentionally sunk in May 2009 as an artificial reef, resting upright on the sandy seabed. Its substantial structure provides an immediate vertical relief in an otherwise flat environment, acting as a natural beacon for marine life.

As you descend, the wreck's transformation into a living habitat becomes apparent. Its surfaces are now adorned with tube worms and ascidians, establishing the foundation for a vibrant food chain. This rich colonisation attracts a diverse range of marine species, from nudibranchs grazing on the settled organisms to schools of jacks patrolling the deck, while various wrasse seek out smaller prey.

The Liberty features three interconnected holds, designed for exploration. These provide sheltered environments, highlighting unique growth patterns within. Divers can navigate through these interior spaces, always having clear exit points towards the deck. This accessibility makes the wreck particularly suitable for those beginning to explore overhead environments, offering pathways that build confidence with proper light usage.

Beyond its structural integrity, the Liberty fulfills its purpose as an artificial reef by fostering marine biodiversity. Early observations noted squid eggs rapidly colonising the wreck's surfaces, indicating a swift establishment of a new ecosystem. Lionfish are often seen moving deliberately near the shadows, while grouper can be found lurking within the deeper sections or structural elements, using them for concealment.

The surrounding sandy seafloor near the hull hosts additional activity, with double-banded bream and saddle bream foraging in schools. The presence of these fish enhances the site's overall biodiversity, ensuring the perimeter is as active as the wreck itself. Navigational points of interest include a two-meter cross and a statue of the Mother of God, added near the wreck.

The Liberty's orientation and depth, reaching down to 27 meters, allow for comprehensive exploration on a single dive. You can circumnavigate the exterior, inspect the hull for hidden life, and then spend time within the accessible holds. The wreck creates varied conditions – from calmer interiors to exposed sections – contributing to the array of species encountered, from those preferring sheltered spots to those thriving on open surfaces.
