Dawn Diving is situated in Qawra, St Paul's Bay, providing a central base for exploring the diverse underwater landscapes of Malta and Gozo. The centre is built on decades of maritime experience, offering a professional environment for those looking to progress through their training or simply enjoy well-guided recreational dives.

The operation focuses on a high standard of safety and flexibility, catering to everyone from those taking their first breaths underwater to technical divers. Whether you are interested in exploring local wrecks or mastering your buoyancy, the centre is positioned to support your goals in the Mediterranean.

The centre is led by Hannes Potgieter, a PADI Staff Instructor with more than 10,000 dives and 22 years of experience managing dive centres. He is joined by his wife, Rhona, a Scottish Divemaster who manages the shop and ensures a welcoming, family-style atmosphere for all guests.

Instruction is conducted in English, with a strict focus on small group sizes. You will never be part of a group larger than five divers per guide, ensuring that your instructor can provide the necessary attention to your buoyancy, navigation, and safety protocols.

While the primary focus is on PADI recreational and professional training, the centre can also facilitate connections for those seeking technical diving instruction. This ensures that even as you move into more advanced territory, you have access to the expertise required.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the entire PADI spectrum. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Scuba Diver course, progressing through the Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications.

For those looking to specialise, the centre offers various PADI Specialty courses, including Wreck Diver, Deep Diver, Night Diver, Multilevel Diver, and Peak Performance Buoyancy. They also provide training in underwater navigation and digital underwater photography.

Professional divers can pursue their career through the Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and Open Water Scuba Instructor pathways, including the IDC Staff Instructor programme. Technical training is also available, with courses such as Tec 40, Tec 45, Tec 50, and Tec Trimix Diver.

The centre provides a complete range of equipment for hire, so you can travel light if you prefer. This includes everything from regulators and BCDs to wetsuits and fins, ensuring you have the necessary kit for the local conditions.

For those looking to extend their bottom time or dive more safely, Nitrox is available on-site. The centre is also equipped to support technical divers, with Trimix capabilities and gas blending services available for those following advanced training programmes.

The Mediterranean waters around Malta are home to a diverse array of marine life. You will frequently encounter various species of wrasse (Labridae), sea bream (Sparidae), and salema porgy (Sarpa salpa) patrolling the reef flats and rocky structures.

Larger pelagics and predatory fish add excitement to the dives, including great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), dentex, and various sharks (Selachimorpha). You may also spot groupers (Epinephelus) and different types of eels, such as moray eels (Muraenidae) and conger eels (Congridae), sheltering in the crevices of the walls.

For those interested in macro life and smaller inhabitants, the seabed and reefs offer plenty to observe. Keep an eye out for octopus (Octopus vulgaris), cuttlefish (Sepiidae), and various rays (Batoidea) or southern stingrays (Hypanus americanus) on the sandy patches. Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) and stonefish (Synanceia) often camouflage themselves against the rocks, while nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani) and seahorses (Hippocampus kuda) provide splashes of colour for the keen observer.
