Marina Lodge at Port Ghalib

Port Ghalib is made for a diving holiday that does not end when you leave the water. Marina Lodge sits within the marina community, with the Red Sea, the Corniche and the evening lights of the port close at hand. You can return from a day outdoors, cool down in an air-conditioned room, then head out for dinner without turning the evening into another expedition.

The lodge suits you if you want a practical base with more around it than a single restaurant and a reception desk. The setting combines a marina, hotels, residences, shops, entertainment and desert activities, while the lodge itself keeps the useful basics close: a pool, restaurants, a rooftop terrace, a spa and a 24-hour front desk. Families are welcome, but couples also have plenty of room to make the place their own.

You are in Port Ghalib, Egypt, directly on the marina and beside the Red Sea. This is not a hotel hidden somewhere behind the resort area: the lodge is part of a large coastal community built around an international marina and a Corniche running for more than half a mile along the peninsula. The surrounding landscape is the usual Red Sea combination of shore, desert and reef.

The Corniche, with shops, restaurants and bars, is about a five-minute drive away. Within the wider Port Ghalib community, you have access to more than 140 places for food, entertainment, shopping and excursions, so you are not confined to the hotel every evening. Divino Restaurant is around 0.8 miles away on foot, while Sofra and Ninos Italian Cuisine are about 5 miles away by road.

Marsa Alam International Airport is roughly 4 miles away by road, making this a straightforward arrival for a diving break. The Port Ghalib International Convention Centre is also about a five-minute drive from the lodge.

The rooms use a Nubian-style design and open onto a balcony or terrace, with views towards the pool, garden or sea depending on the room you choose. That outdoor space gives you somewhere to sit with a drink, check the next day's plans or simply let the Red Sea air do some of the work after a long day outside. A minibar, electric kettle, satellite television and wardrobe cover the practical side of the stay.

For two people, a room with a sea or broader view makes the most sense if the outlook matters more than anything else. The garden-view option is the straightforward choice when you want a dependable base, while the One-Bedroom Suite gives you a separate living area and more space to spread out. Some rooms also have an oriental seating area with a sofa.

Air conditioning matters here, particularly when you come back warm, salty and ready for a shower rather than a conversation. Private bathrooms include a bath or shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer, and daily housekeeping keeps the room in order while you get on with the important business of being out on the water. Ground-floor units are available, while upper floors are reached by stairs only.

Breakfast is served as a buffet, with continental, Italian, vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and American choices. That gives you room to keep things simple before an early start or build a more substantial plate when the day's plans allow it. Breakfast can also be taken in your room, which is useful when your body has already voted for a quiet morning.

There are two restaurants. Indigo Restaurant handles breakfast and à-la-carte specialities, giving you an option beyond the standard buffet routine when you want a proper meal at the lodge. A snack bar and room service cover the less formal moments, including the familiar post-dive period when hunger arrives before the desire to dress for dinner.

For drinks and a change of level, Viz occupies the rooftop terrace. The lodge also has a bar and minibars in the rooms, so you can choose between staying put, taking in the marina from above or heading along the Corniche for a wider choice of restaurants and bars.

The outdoor pool, sun terrace, loungers and umbrellas give you an easy option for the hours when you want to dry off without committing to a major activity. There is also a private beach area and a garden, while pool and beach towels keep the practical arrangements pleasantly dull. Dull is underrated when you have already spent the day concentrating on air, depth and currents.

The spa offers massages, including stone massage, with a steam room and sauna for a slower reset. Fitness facilities and yoga classes are available if you still have energy to spend, although nobody will judge you for choosing a lounger instead. Beauty services include facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing and hairdressing.

When you and your companion want to do something more active, Port Ghalib opens up a broader list: kayaking, fishing, boat excursions, cycling, cultural excursions and semi-submarine trips. Desert safaris, sunset safaris, horse riding and camel racing add a distinctly inland option, while bowling, billiards, darts, table tennis and the games room work when the wind, the heat or simple tiredness wins the argument. Evening entertainment, a nightclub and a DJ are also part of the resort's offering.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. You need photo identification and a payment card at arrival, and the lodge asks you to share your expected arrival time in advance. The front desk operates around the clock, with luggage storage, concierge assistance, a tour desk and an ATM on site.

An airport shuttle is available on request, and car hire can be arranged. The lodge has free private parking without the need to reserve a space. Wi-Fi is free in the public areas. Laundry, dry cleaning and ironing are available for the clothes that have suffered the usual holiday treatment, and room service gives you another way to keep the evening uncomplicated.

Wheelchair-accessible facilities are available, including toilets with grab rails, and some units are entirely on the ground floor. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so check the room location if that matters to you. Children of all ages are welcome; children aged 12 and over are treated as adults for the stay. Cash is not accepted, and pets are not permitted.

Port Ghalib operates as a self-sufficient coastal community with its own wastewater treatment plant, power station and desalination plant. For you, that means water and basic utilities are handled within the development rather than relying on a patchwork of temporary arrangements.

Renewable sources account for 20% of the community's energy. The approach is built into Port Ghalib's infrastructure, alongside the protection of its coastal setting, desert surroundings and Red Sea environment. There is no separate certification to point to, but the water and energy systems are concrete parts of how the destination is run.
