Eel Garden, Aqaba: Exploring Jordan's iconic reef

Eel Garden, locally known as Ras Al Yamanya, is a classic reef dive in Aqaba, easily accessible from shore. You'll find yourself just a short walk from the entry point, making it convenient for multiple dives or a relaxed exploration. The entry is gentle, leading you directly into a sandy slope that defines the site's initial character. This gradual descent allows for an unhurried start, letting you adjust to the underwater environment before reaching the main features.

As you fin out from the entry, the sandy slope transitions into a wide seagrass bed, starting around 6 to 10 metres. This is where you'll encounter the site's namesake: one of the Red Sea's most extensive colonies of garden eels. These fascinating creatures emerge from their burrows, swaying in unison, creating a living carpet that stretches across the seabed. Observing their synchronized movements and how they retract into the sand as you approach is a highlight of the shallower section.

Beyond the garden eel colony, the slope continues to descend, reaching depths of 20 to 22 metres. Here, you'll find a prominent coral pinnacle rising from the seabed, densely covered in soft corals. This pinnacle acts as a focal point, attracting a variety of reef fish and offering numerous hiding spots for smaller creatures. Exploring its crevices reveals a rich macro environment, making it a prime spot for underwater photography.

The surrounding reef structure extends into the mid-20 metre range, featuring scattered coral heads and black coral formations. These areas provide shelter for moray eels, including the grey moray, often found peeking from their rocky retreats. Keep an eye out for stingrays resting on the sand, and the well-camouflaged flounder blending into the bottom. The topography here creates a varied landscape, ensuring there's always something new to discover as you navigate the reef.

The site's diverse ecosystem supports a range of marine life, from the larger red-toothed grouper to the more elusive harlequin shrimp and ghost pipefish. Glassfish often congregate in dense schools around coral formations, while lionfish and scorpionfish can be spotted patiently waiting for prey. Anemonefish, butterflyfish, and unicornfish are common sights, adding vibrant colours to the reef. Each section of Eel Garden offers distinct opportunities for observation.

While generally calm, the current at Eel Garden can be variable, with occasional surge and changes in visibility influenced by local topography and sea state. It's a site where adjusting your dive plan to the tide, wind, and season is prudent. The accessibility and varied depths allow for different dive profiles, from shallow explorations of the garden eels to deeper investigations around the pinnacle and black coral formations.
