Cape Town Freediving

Established in 2012, Cape Town Freediving is the first centre in South Africa dedicated solely to the discipline of freediving. Located in Cape Town, the facility serves a community focused on the connection between the human body and the ocean.

Whether you are looking for adventure-based exploration through local kelp forests or high-performance training for depth, distance, or static apnea, the centre provides a structured environment for all levels. The curriculum is designed to bridge the gap between recreational exploration and serious competitive sport.

The instructor team consists of high-level professionals, including several national record holders. This ensures that whether you are working on breath-hold techniques in a pool or managing buoyancy in the ocean, you are learning from the best in the field.

The centre operates in collaboration with Pure Apnea to maintain rigorous safety and training standards. All instruction is delivered in English.

The course catalogue is comprehensive, covering both recreational and professional paths. You can train for Adventure Freediver or Sport Freediver certifications, focusing on either natural environment exploration or technical discipline like depth and distance.

For those looking to professionalise, the centre offers Freediving Instructor and Pure Apnea Instructor programmes. They also host specialised Surf Apnea workshops designed to help surfers manage breath-hold situations while navigating waves.

The kelp forests and reefs host a diverse range of larger marine life. You can encounter seals, penguins, and various species of sharks, including small sharks and gully sharks. During certain seasons, you may also see humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) or southern right whales.

In the kelp forests, you will find a variety of fish and larger invertebrates. This includes octopus (Octopoda), various fish, and crabs.

Macro life and smaller invertebrates are abundant throughout the area. You can observe octopus (Octopoda) and a variety of crustaceans.
