Anthony’s Key Resort is built for divers who want the sea to remain part of the day, rather than something glimpsed from a roadside hotel. The resort spreads between Sandy Bay on Roatán and Anthony’s Key, a private nine-acre island, with waterside bungalows, hillside retreats and the practical comforts that matter when you have been wet, hungry and carrying too much kit for several hours.

The mood is deliberately close to nature and a little removed from modern clutter. Rooms have no telephones or televisions, while the resort brings the evening back to simpler choices: sit by the water, find a bar, take a massage, or join the island’s live music and themed nights. Couples have quieter corners to retreat to, while families have roomier accommodation and activities aimed at younger guests.

You are in Sandy Bay, Honduras, on the north-west coast of Roatán. The resort sits directly by the sea, with its own beach areas on the main island and on Bailey’s Key, and the private key is reached by boat taxi. That arrangement gives you a genuine change of scene without putting you far from the island’s useful landmarks and beaches.

Sandy Bay Beach is right beside the resort. Carambola Gardens is about 250 metres away, while Sandy Bay National Park is around 2 miles away. West End Beach is roughly 1.9 miles away, and West Bay Beach about 3.8 miles, so you can reach Roatán’s better-known beaches without turning the day into an expedition.

The location also keeps airport logistics straightforward. Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport is about 2.8 miles away, with airport transfers available through the resort.

The accommodation works best when you choose it around the way you travel. Couples can look towards the King Suite with Ocean View for a more private stay, while the sea-view family room with bunk beds is the obvious fit when several people need to sleep under one roof. The larger Key Deluxe option gives families more breathing room than the more compact rooms, particularly useful when wet bags, clothes and the usual post-dive clutter begin to colonise every available surface.

Every room has air conditioning, a fan, a private bathroom, a terrace or balcony, wardrobe space and a hairdryer. That combination is sensible in Roatán: cool the room properly when the heat has followed you back from the water, then use the balcony or terrace when you want air rather than another enclosed space. A refrigerator and coffee machine cover the first drink of the day and the return from the dive boat, while soundproof rooms and private entrances add a little separation from the communal parts of the resort.

Sea views are available in selected accommodation, and the property also offers mountain-view rooms. The absence of televisions and telephones is worth treating as a feature rather than a hardship, provided you are happy to let the reef, the weather and the bar compete for your attention.

The all-inclusive arrangement centres on Ankor Seafood Grill, the resort’s seaside restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The kitchen works with seafood, local ingredients and island spices, with freshly caught lobster and snapper alongside the chef’s signature Prime Rib. It is the sort of menu that makes sense when you come out of the water ready to eat rather than discuss gastronomy at length.

Three à la carte meals are included in the resort’s all-inclusive packages, and dietary requests can be accommodated through the Head Waiter. Breakfast is American in style, while the broader offer brings in tropical fruit, local specialities and the day’s seafood catch.

There are four places to pause with a drink. Ankor Bar sits by the restaurant and serves signature cocktails, wine, soft drinks and fruit juices; Frangipani Bar & Lounge is higher up, with wide sunset views, happy hours and themed evenings; AKR Pool Bar lets you stay in the water while ordering a cocktail; and Coast Coffee handles Honduran coffee, tea and iced drinks in the main lobby. After a full day of diving, that is a useful spread: coffee early, something cold by the pool, and a proper sunset drink when the fins are finally put away.

The main freshwater pool is on Anthony’s Key, with loungers for the hours when the sea has already had enough of you. The resort also offers kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and boat excursions, so you can stay on the water without booking another full dive day. Horse riding, wildlife activities and visits to the Roatán Museum or the Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences add land-based options when you want a change of subject.

Ixora Spa covers the predictable post-dive repairs: Swedish, deep-tissue and hot-stone massages, facial treatments, body wraps and scrubs, manicures and pedicures. There is also an air-conditioned fitness centre with cardio and strength equipment, plus an open-air yoga deck beneath the trees for meditation and weekly sunrise or sunset yoga sessions.

Evenings have a timetable of their own, without requiring you to go anywhere. Frangipani hosts live music and themed events, Thursday brings trivia, and Wednesday is Island Fiesta Night with live music, limbo contests, crab races and a barbecue dinner. Families can use the indoor play area and board games, while the Dolphin Scuba Summer Camp and PADI Scuba for Kids programmes give younger guests their own introduction to the underwater world.

Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport is about 2.8 miles from the resort. An airport shuttle is available, and transfers are included with most stays; arrange the details with the resort before travelling. Car hire is also available, while free private parking is provided on site without a reservation.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to 22:00 and check-out from 08:00 to 11:00. Express check-in and check-out, luggage storage, lockers and a tour desk make the arrival and departure routine less awkward, particularly if your flight times do not match the room timetable. Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort at no extra charge.

There is an on-site minimarket, the Seaside Gift Shop and the AKR Snack Shop, along with an infirmary. Laundry is available, and the resort can arrange a shuttle service and car hire. Children of all ages are welcome; children aged 13 and over are charged as adults, and cots or extra beds depend on the accommodation selected.

The resort’s sustainability work is tied directly to the reef rather than left as a slogan on the wall. A 532 kW solar installation can power the resort during the day, and rainwater collection forms part of its water management.

Wastewater is treated through a Bio-Microbics plant and reused to irrigate the gardens. Linen is changed every three days, towels can be reused, and bulk bathroom dispensers are used in the rooms. The resort also avoids buying or selling single-use plastic bags, bottles and straws, and encourages guests to carry reusable water bottles.

Marine conservation includes coral nursery restoration with the Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences, maintenance dives and regular underwater clean-ups. The resort is certified 100% AWARE by PADI and participates in Project AWARE.
