Roatan Backpackers' Hostel

English, French and Spanish are spoken by the hotel team, so you can discuss your arrival, your room or tomorrow’s plans without relying on hand signals. Roatan Backpackers Hostel is a hostel in the useful, sociable sense: private rooms, dormitories and apartments, a shared kitchen, a pool and outdoor spaces where travelling divers and other island explorers can cross paths.

The tone is practical rather than polished. You have somewhere to cook, somewhere to sit, Wi-Fi for sorting out the next day and a restaurant on site for the evenings when you cannot face making decisions. Families can use the private accommodation, while children aged 13 and over are welcome throughout the property; younger children are welcome in private accommodation but not in dormitories unless the whole dormitory is booked.

You are in Sandy Bay, Honduras, in a residential area between the island’s airport and West End. Sandy Bay Beach is about half a mile away, roughly five minutes on foot. It is a sandy beach and a good place for a walk or shore snorkelling, although the shallows have mud and turtle grass rather than postcard-perfect swimming water. The coral reef lies offshore, reached by a swim from the beach.

Carambola Gardens is about half a mile away, close enough for a walk when your legs have recovered from the morning. West End is around 3 miles away by road, with restaurants and bars for a change of scene. Parque Gumbalimba is about 6 miles away. Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport is roughly 5 miles from the hostel, around a short drive rather than an expedition with your luggage.

The choice matters here because the accommodation covers several ways of travelling. Dormitories suit a solo diver who would rather spend the money in the water, while private rooms give you a door to close and a bathroom of your own. Apartments add a private kitchen, useful when your dive schedule ignores restaurant hours or when you simply want breakfast without conversation.

Family rooms and private accommodation make more sense for a small group, with balconies, kitchenettes and work desks included in the room set-up. The kitchenette is not just a brochure word after a long day: it gives you somewhere to keep simple food and prepare something without turning dinner into a full evening project. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and rooms have a fan; air conditioning is available in selected accommodation, including the Deluxe Double Room, Family Bungalow, Family Suite, Cottage with Garden View, Double or Twin Room with Bathroom, Double Room with Private Bathroom and Deluxe King Studio.

That last point is worth checking before you book. Air conditioning is optional in those categories, while the other accommodation has fan cooling. Private bathrooms, balconies and bed linen are part of the room offer, and non-smoking rooms are available. There are no cots or extra beds, so the room you choose needs to work for the people who are actually travelling.

The Sunflower Cafe handles breakfast and dinner on site, with local cooking, vegetarian and vegan choices, dairy-free options and homemade pastries. Breakfast is included and starts at 8am, while dinner is served at 7pm and needs arranging earlier in the day. That timing may suit a leisurely island morning, but it is not an early-bird diver’s breakfast: check your boat departure before assuming the cafe will feed you before the first splash.

The cafe is seasonal, open from December to early May. Its seating area remains available through the day for working or relaxing, and drinks can be requested at the desk. There is no bar to retreat to and no room service, so the rhythm is cafe, shared kitchen or nearby food rather than a late-night hotel operation.

The kitchen arrangements help keep the choice flexible. Guests in dormitories and private rooms have access to a shared kitchen, while apartments have private kitchens. A well-stocked supermarket is about five minutes away on foot, and local restaurants are nearby. Fresh mangoes, cashews, bananas, plantains, hog plums, sea grapes and guavas are available in the neighbourhood; useful provisions for the room, particularly when a dive day leaves you hungry at an inconvenient hour.

The outdoor swimming pool is reserved for hostel guests and sits beside a patio, gardens, an outdoor shower and a garden pergola. Sun loungers, outdoor furniture and a sun terrace give you somewhere to dry off and let the afternoon pass without having to organise an excursion. Hammocks in the garden complete the argument for doing very little.

When the legs want movement but not another boat trip, yoga and fitness sessions are available. Two nearby gyms, Energym and Island Gym, offer a more conventional workout within walking distance. There are also board games, occasional film nights, painting evenings and cooking classes focused on local food.

For a day away from the water, the hostel can help arrange visits to Carambola Botanical Gardens, Anthony’s Key Resort, the iguana farm, Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout, ziplining, guided tours in the colonia, buggy tours and ATV tours. Spanish lessons and volunteering opportunities add something more purposeful for longer stays. Car hire and scooter hire are also available for exploring beyond Sandy Bay.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 7pm, and you need to tell the hostel when you expect to arrive. Check-out is by 11am. Payments are accepted in cash only, and payment before arrival by bank transfer may be required. Airport transfers are available through the hostel, either as an arranged service or a shuttle, and should be organised with the property. Car hire is also available.

The route from Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport takes around 15 minutes by car. Tell the driver Sandy Bay by Solgas, opposite Sonrise Calvary Chapel, between kilometre markers 10 and 11; the hostel is the fifth building on a small dirt road on the left. From the ferry dock, the drive takes around 20 minutes. Luggage storage, free private parking and laundry are available, with parking requiring prior arrangement.

Pets are allowed in selected accommodation with a separate entrance, subject to the property’s rules. They must stay on a lead, owners are responsible for cleaning up, and pets are not allowed in indoor communal areas. Smoking is restricted to the designated area near the communal kitchen. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested, which is useful when flights and dive boats refuse to align neatly.

The property carries Green Leader, TripAdvisor Gold Award, and Go Blue Central America Geotourism recognition. Its environmental work is practical rather than decorative: solar panels cover part of the electricity use, and solar lighting is used along the paths and outdoors.

Rainwater is collected in a cistern, while treated grey water is recycled for garden irrigation. LED bulbs reduce electricity use, kitchen waste is composted and cans and plastic bottles go through a recycling programme. Purified water is sold in reusable five-gallon containers, helping you refill rather than work through a small mountain of single-use bottles.
