Sunshine Scuba

Located in Honolulu, Sunshine Scuba has been a fixture of the local diving community since 1991. As a PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Centre (IDC), it has built a reputation over more than 35 years for high-standard training and professional development.

The centre is ideally positioned for those looking to explore the diverse underwater landscape of Oahu. Whether you are looking to complete your initial certifications or are an experienced diver seeking wreck or reef exploration, the facility provides the expertise required for the local conditions.

The team is led by highly qualified instructors, including Platinum Course Directors, ensuring a level of expertise geared towards both recreational and professional progression. With a staff of four instructors, the centre is well-equipped to handle a variety of training needs.

Instruction is available in both English and Japanese, making it a reliable choice for international divers. The staff brings significant experience to the table, with some team members having been active in the industry for up to 38 years.

The centre offers a comprehensive curriculum through PADI, covering every stage of a diver's journey. Beginners can start with the Scuba Diver or Open Water Diver courses, while those looking to advance can enrol in the Advanced Open Water Diver or Specialty Diver programmes.

For professional divers, Sunshine Scuba is a dedicated training hub. They offer the full suite of professional paths, including Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and Instructor training. They also run the IDC (Instructor Development Course) and specific intensive programmes, such as a 31-day course designed for those aiming to become instructors.

For those who prefer not to carry their own heavy kit, a full range of rental equipment is available on-site. This includes BCDs, regulators, wetsuits, fins, masks, snorkels, boots, and dive computers, as well as accessories such as torches, knives, and gloves.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom times. The centre also provides cylinders and weights for rental to ensure you are ready for your boat trips.

The reefs around Oahu are home to a vibrant array of marine life. You will frequently encounter various reef fish, including snapper (Lutjanidae), surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), and butterflyfish (Chaetodon). Schools of humuhumunukunukuapua'a and various angelfish (Pomacanthidae) add colour to the seascape.

Larger pelagics and popular species are often seen by divers, such as green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), and white-tip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus). You may also spot dolphins (Delphinidae), manta rays (Mobula alfredi), and barracuda (Sphyraena) passing through the area.

The seabed is rich with invertebrates and smaller creatures. Look out for octopuses (Octopus vulgaris), leaf scorpionfish, devil scorpionfish, and various species of eel (Anguilliformes). Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani) and various shrimp (Caridea) can be found amongst the corals.

The structural beauty of the sites is provided by a healthy mix of hard corals and soft corals, alongside sponges (Porifera) and gorgonians (Gorgonacea). Sea anemones (Actiniaria) also provide habitat for many of the smaller reef inhabitants.

The best time to dive in this region is from March to November. During these months, water temperatures typically range between 23°C and 27°C.
