Nautilus Reef, Honolulu: Exploring a Peanut-Shaped Coral Formation

Nautilus Reef lies just off the coast of Waikiki, easily accessible from Honolulu and a short boat ride from Kewalo Basin. This site is defined by its distinctive 'peanut-shaped' coral and lava rock formation. You'll find a series of overhangs and small crevices within the reef structure, which provides shelter and hiding spots for local marine inhabitants.

The dive here is primarily a shallow reef exploration, with depths ranging from 9 meters down to 18 meters. The topography allows for a relaxed profile, making it suitable for extending your bottom time and thoroughly exploring the various nooks and crannies. Light penetration remains consistent, illuminating the hard and soft corals that cover the reef, alongside sponges and algae.

As you traverse the reef, you'll encounter a variety of reef fish. Butterflyfish and angelfish are common, moving among the corals. Parrotfish work the substrate, while schools of goatfish often patrol the open areas. Keep an eye out for moray eels tucked into the lava rock crevices and octopuses concealed within the reef.

Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are frequent visitors to Nautilus Reef, often found resting or feeding on the algae. Reef sharks also make occasional appearances, usually seen patrolling the deeper edges of the formation. Nudibranchs and shrimp add to the smaller, macro life that can be found in more intricate sections of the reef.

While generally a calm dive, you can expect a moderate current at times, especially when moving between different sections of the reef. Visibility is consistently good, often reaching up to 30 meters, which allows for clear views of the entire reef system and any larger pelagic species that might pass through. The site's diverse ecosystem supports a healthy population of marine life, making each dive dynamic.
