Haad Yao Divers

Established in 1997 and still managed by its original owners, Haad Yao Divers has become a mainstay of the Koh Phangan diving community. Located in Haad Yao, just 20 minutes from the Thongsala pier, the centre offers a more intimate, family-run atmosphere compared to the larger operations in the region.

The centre is positioned behind the Silver Beach and Haad Yao Sunset Bungalows, making it easily accessible for those staying in the area. It operates with a clear commitment to quality over quantity, ensuring that dive groups remain small and manageable for both instructors and divers.

The team is highly qualified and operates with a strict policy of not mixing experienced divers with beginners during excursions. This ensures that the pace and technical requirements of each dive are appropriate for the group's skill level.

Safety and professionalism are central to their operation, with a guide-to-diver ratio capped at a maximum of four. The staff are experienced in a wide range of environments, from shallow reef flats to more advanced sites like Sail Rock and Ang Thong Marine Park.

Communication is straightforward, with the team speaking English, German, and Thai. This multilingual capability helps ensure that instruction and safety briefings are clearly understood by all divers.

Haad Yao Divers offers a comprehensive catalogue of PADI courses catering to every stage of a diver's progression. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Open Water Diver course, with subsequent paths leading through Scuba Diver and Advanced Open Water.

For those looking to refine their skills or move into professional territory, the centre provides Rescue Diver, Deep Diver, and Divemaster training. They also offer specialised training such as the Enriched Air/NITROX course, Night Dive certification, and Underwater Photographer courses, as well as Side Mount instruction.

The centre provides a full range of equipment for hire, including regulators, BCDs, and wetsuits, as well as essential snorkeling kit such as masks, fins, and snorkels. A dedicated retail area is available on-site for those looking to purchase specific items.

For those looking to extend their bottom time, Nitrox is available on-site. The facility includes a reception, classroom for theory work, and dedicated storage areas for equipment.

The reefs around Koh Phangan are home to a diverse array of colourful reef fish, including various species of Butterflyfish (Chaetodon), Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), and Wrasse (Labridae). You will often see Parrotfish (Calotomus) grazing on the coral, alongside Grouper (Epinephelus) and various species of Moray eel (Muraenidae).

In the open water and along the walls, larger pelagics and predators can be spotted, such as Reef shark (Carcharhinus) and Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda). The area is also known for sightings of whale sharks during certain seasons.

The seabed and reef structures are populated by a variety of invertebrates, including sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and various crabs (Brachyura). For those interested in macro life, the reefs host Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), shrimp (Caridea), and various anemone fish.

The hard coral landscape is built upon a foundation of staghorn coral and table coral, providing essential habitat for the local marine life, including sea turtles (Cheloniidae) and blue spotted stingrays.

Diving in the area is influenced by local weather patterns, with some sites like Haad Salad and Koh Ma being accessed via beach dives depending on the sea conditions. The house reef at Haad Yao is noted for its low currents, making it a stable environment for training.
