SEA THERAPY ~ Freediving Experiences in the Azores

Located at the Horta Marina on the island of Faial, Sea Therapy provides a specialized approach to freediving in the Azores. The centre focuses on creating a deep connection with the ocean through controlled, mindful movement and breathing techniques.

Instead of large groups, the centre operates through exclusive private or semi-private outings. This ensures a calm environment for both the divers and the marine life they encounter.

The centre is led by Janaína Bon de Sousa, an international Apnea Academy instructor and a national CMAS record holder. Her background as a marine biologist brings a scientific depth to the instruction, focusing on the biological relationship between the diver and the environment.

All training sessions are conducted under the Apnea Academy curriculum, known for its focus on relaxation and physiological efficiency. Instruction is available in English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish.

The centre offers a structured progression through the Apnea Academy curriculum, including Apnea Experience Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. These courses focus on the technical and mental aspects of breath-hold diving.

For those looking to refine their skills in a controlled environment, pool coaching is available. The centre also provides Open Water Coaching for divers looking to bridge the gap between theory and the ocean.

For those traveling without their own kit, a selection of freediving equipment is available for hire on-site. This includes the essential items needed for breath-hold training and exploration.

The waters around Faial are a significant habitat for large pelagic species. You can encounter Blue shark (Prionace glauca) and various species of rays, including Mobula ray (Mobula) and Manta ray (Mobula alfredi).

In the open water, you may see diverse tuna species such as skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), albacore tuna, and Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda). Other large predators include barracudas (Sphyraena) and various species of jacks.

On the seabed and reefs, you will find a variety of life including grouper (Epinephelinae), triggerfish (Balistidae), and various stingrays. Sea turtles (Cheloniidae) are also known to frequent these waters.
