Sao Jorge Dive Center

Located at the Porto Comercial de Velas on the island of São Jorge, the São Jorge Dive & Sail Center serves as a strategic base for exploring the central group of the Azores. The centre has been operating since 1998, evolving from its origins as UrzelinaTur to become a dedicated diving and nautical hub.

The centre is ideally positioned for those looking to move between the islands, offering a gateway to the unique volcanic formations and Atlantic waters that define this archipelago. Whether you are looking for a day of diving or a more extensive nautical excursion, the location provides direct access to the island's most significant maritime features.

The centre is run by a young and competent team that focuses on personalised experiences for every diver. As an SSI affiliated centre, they provide a structured and professional environment for both recreational divers and those pursuing professional career paths.

Training is comprehensive, covering everything from initial entry-level courses to advanced instructor training. The team is committed to safety and technical proficiency, ensuring that all activities, whether diving, sailing, or snorkeling, are conducted with professional oversight.

The course catalogue is extensive, following the SSI curriculum from the very beginning. Beginners can start with TryScuba or the Scuba Diver course, progressing through to Open Water Diver and Advanced Adventurer.

For those looking to refine their skills or move into professional diving, the centre offers specialised training such as Peak Performance Buoyancy, Deep Diver, and Night and Low Visibility Diving. Professional pathways are also fully supported, with courses available for Stress and Rescue, Divemaster, and Assistant Instructor.

The fleet includes the Dufour Grande Large 412, a sailing yacht named HATCHI which carries up to 6 people. This vessel offers a different perspective on the Azores, allowing for a more relaxed pace while navigating the surrounding waters.

For quicker access to dive sites, the centre operates two semi-rigid boats. The HALFI is a Joker Coaster 650 with a capacity for 14 people, while the FOLIÃO is a smaller Joker Coaster 440 designed for up to 6 people.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit for divers, including masks, snorkels, fins, wetsuits, BCDs, and regulators. For night dives, torches are also available for hire.

On-site, Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom time. The centre is well-equipped to handle the needs of both local divers and those travelling through the archipelago.

The centre operates seasonally from 15 March to 31 October. All maritime activities, including diving and sailing, are subject to local weather conditions and sea states.

While the Azores offer diverse underwater environments, divers should always be prepared for the Atlantic conditions characteristic of the central group of islands.
