Baixa dos Cedros, Terceira: Pinnacle Diving in the Azores

Baixa dos Cedros is an offshore pinnacle rising from the seabed, with its shallowest point at 15 metres. You begin your descent here, often directly into the blue, before the structure of the pinnacle becomes clear. It's an exposed site on the north coast of Faial, and the conditions often reflect that, with significant current dictating your approach and profile.

The pinnacle itself begins to form a distinct profile around 18 metres, offering a clear reference point as you move deeper. You'll find yourself navigating the contours of the rock, looking for sheltered spots where resident marine life might be less affected by the prevailing current. The structure provides an upwelling that often attracts larger pelagics.

As you explore the deeper sections, down to 40 metres, the true scale of Baixa dos Cedros becomes apparent. This depth allows for the observation of a different ecosystem, with less light and more opportunity for transient pelagic species. The primary draw to Baixa dos Cedros is the pelagic activity. Hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) are a notable presence, often seen patrolling the deeper areas or circling the pinnacle. Their encounters are a highlight, but they require patience and a careful approach, often involving a degree of current management to stay in an observation position. Other large pelagic fish are also common here, drawn by the open ocean conditions and the baitfish attracted to the seamount.
