Grand Bahama Scuba

Grand Bahama Scuba is situated in Freeport, based at the Ocean Reef Yacht Club on Bahama Reef Blvd. The local geography is defined by a broad, shallow bank that extends offshore, bordered by a shallow barrier reef. This structure gives way to a gradual drop-off that descends in a stepwise fashion until it reaches a vertical wall plunging from two hundred to two thousand feet.

The area benefits from an influx of clear water from the deep, which helps maintain excellent visibility across the various dive sites. The south shore of Grand Bahama also features an extensive mooring system, an essential detail for protecting the delicate coral and marine life in these waters.

The centre is operated by Fred Riger, who has been guiding divers through the waters of Grand Bahama for over 40 years. The business philosophy is built around personal service and diver safety, ensuring that everyone feels supported throughout their experience.

Dives are conducted in small, friendly groups to maintain a high standard of supervision and instruction. All training and guiding are conducted in English.

Grand Bahama Scuba is an SDI affiliated centre offering a comprehensive range of training. For those starting their journey, they provide Introduction to Scuba, Open Water Certification Courses, and Junior Certification Courses.

Experienced divers can progress through Advanced Course training, Specialty Courses, and Dive Master programmes. The centre also offers the Associate Instructor Course for those looking to enter the professional ranks. Safety-focused training is available through the Stress Rescue Course and CPR/First Aid certifications, alongside Basic Nitrox training.

For those not travelling with their own kit, a range of equipment is available for hire, including BCDs, regulators, wetsuits, dive computers, and underwater torches. Weights and cylinders are included as part of the diving service.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom time. The centre also provides oxygen for safety purposes.

The reefs are home to a vibrant array of life, including various species of colourful fish and extensive coral formations. You will frequently encounter crinoids, shrimp, and crabs amongst the reef structure.

Macro life is abundant, with octopus, lobster, and various other crustaceans inhabiting the crevices and sandy patches. These smaller inhabitants are often best observed during night dives or when exploring the mushroom-shaped coral heads.

For those seeking larger pelagics, Shark Junction provides encounters with Caribbean reef sharks. These animals are known to circle the divers, providing a significant highlight for any trip to Grand Bahama.

The dive sites vary from shallow reef flats to deep canyons and tunnels. While the reef top is relatively accessible, the stepwise drop-off leads to much deeper vertical walls.
