Juvis, Havelock Island: Shallow Reef Exploration for All

Juvis is set within a sheltered section of John Lawrence, forming an extended reef structure that slopes gently down. The site starts shallow, around 4 metres, making the initial descent straightforward and relaxing. As you move towards the deeper sections, the reef gradually reaches its maximum depth of 22 metres, maintaining a consistent coral cover across its topography.

Below the surface, the reef unfolds with a variety of formations, providing shelter and hunting grounds for a wide range of marine species. The clear water allows for expansive views, letting you take in the breadth of the coral gardens from a distance before focusing on the intricate details of the reef system. This calm environment is conducive to leisurely inspection of the bottom and the activity around the coral heads.

Among the marine inhabitants, you can reliably find clownfish (Amphiprioninae) moving in and out of their host anemones, a common and engaging sight. Leopard sharks (Stegostoma tigrinum) are also regularly encountered, often resting on the sandy patches or cruising along the reef's edge. Keep a keen eye out for octopuses (Octopoda) in their crevices and various species of stingrays (Myliobatoidei) settled on the seabed.

The site also hosts a range of schooling fish. Beyond the common reef residents, Juvis offers specific finds like humphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum), known for their distinct shape and grazing habits, and diverse smaller creatures. Seahorses (Hippocampus) are present, requiring a slow, methodical search among the seagrass and coral branches. This level of detail makes Juvis a rewarding site for those who enjoy taking their time and observing the smaller, often overlooked, inhabitants of the reef.
