Kudarah Thila Marine Reserve, Maldives: Pinnacle and Batfish Schools

Kudarah Thila presents itself as a classic Maldivian thila, an isolated underwater pinnacle that ascends from the surrounding depths. As you descend, the thila's structure becomes clear: a substantial formation with steep sides that plunge into the blue. This is not a gently sloping reef; instead, you encounter a powerful, almost sculptural presence underwater, shaped by millennia of currents and the constant activity of marine life. The contours are dramatic, inviting a closer look into the reef's complex architecture.

The topography here offers an intricate network of geological features that demand exploration. You will navigate through deep clefts that cut into the thila, providing sheltered passages and unexpected turns. Overhangs form natural canopies, creating shifting light effects and offering refuge for smaller reef inhabitants, while spacious caves open up, drawing you deeper into the thila's embrace. The currents, which can range from moderate to strong, often dictate a drift dive along the pinnacle, concentrating large schools of blue striped snapper, yellow snapper, and fusiliers around the reef. This concentration of prey attracts larger pelagic species, enhancing the site's reputation.

Kudarah Thila is heavily covered in soft corals and sea fans, which thrive in the nutrient-rich currents. This dense benthic life creates a vibrant backdrop for encounters with a variety of reef inhabitants. You can expect to see grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks patrolling the deeper sections, alongside napoleon wrasse and various moray eels. The site also hosts sea turtles, triggerfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish, all contributing to the rich biodiversity.

Designated a protected marine park in 1995, Kudarah Thila is widely regarded as one of the most fish-rich thilas in the Maldives. The combination of its unique topography, dense coral coverage, and the dynamic influence of channel currents makes it an exciting dive. The site is frequently described as one of the most iconic in South Ari Atoll, offering consistent encounters with large schooling fish and vibrant reef life, particularly when incoming currents are present.
