Fuvahmulah Dive

Fuvahmulah is an island unlike any other in the Maldives. Unlike the typical coral atolls, this is a single, large volcanic island surrounded by deep water, which creates a unique environment for marine life. The island is known for its white pebble beaches, lush tropical vegetation, and freshwater lakes.

Operating since 2017, Fuvahmulah Dive has established itself as a pioneer in the region, particularly for those seeking encounters with large pelagics. The centre is strategically positioned near the port, allowing for efficient access to the surrounding waters where the island's deep drop-offs meet the reef.

The team is comprised primarily of local dive guides and crew members who possess an intimate knowledge of the island's evolving marine environment. This local expertise is a significant asset when navigating the unpredictable conditions often found around Fuvahmulah.

Beyond standard guiding, the centre maintains a high level of scientific engagement. A permanent marine biologist is part of the team, conducting official research on tiger sharks and thresher sharks. This scientific approach ensures that the dives are not just encounters, but opportunities to understand the ecology of the area.

Instruction is provided in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Tagalog, and Dhivehi. This multilingual capability makes the centre accessible to a wide range of international divers.

As a PADI 5 Star Dive Centre, the school offers a comprehensive curriculum ranging from the Open Water Diver course through to Divemaster. For those looking to refine their skills, specialty courses such as Peak Performance Buoyancy, Deep Diver, Drift Diver, and Boat Diver are available.

They also provide a range of AWARE specialties, including Coral Reef Conservation, Fish Identification, and Shark Conservation. For those interested in the technical or professional side of the industry, they offer the Instructor Development Course (IDC). Additionally, the centre provides AIDA freediving training from levels 1 through 4.

The centre operates two traditional dhoanis, which are local style boats designed for comfort and stability. One vessel is configured for up to 20 passengers, while the second is smaller, accommodating a maximum of 15.

These boats are well-equipped for day trips, featuring sun decks for relaxation between dives, as well as toilets, bathrooms, and changing rooms. For convenience after a dive, freshwater showers are available on the deck. Nitrox is available on board for those using enriched air.

The centre offers full equipment hire for divers who prefer not to travel with their own kit. This includes all the essential components needed for a comfortable dive.

On-site facilities include dedicated changing rooms and showers. The centre also utilises automatic compressor filling systems to ensure reliable gas supply for all divers.

The area is world-renowned for its pelagic life. You can expect to encounter Tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) on almost every dive, particularly at the Tiger Zoo. Other large species include Thresher shark, hammerhead sharks, silvertip sharks, and oceanic whitetip sharks. During specific windows, you may also see Scalloped Hammerhead sharks between October and December, or Whale shark sightings between January and May.

Large schooling fish are a constant presence, including giant trevally, rainbow runners, great barracuda, and various snapper (Lutjanus) species. You will also see mantas, particularly black oceanic mantas from March to May, and various rays such as the Southern stingray (Hypanus americanus).

For those interested in smaller details, the reefs host a variety of reef fish, moray eels, turtles, and octopuses. Macro life includes nudibranchs and various crustaceans, adding colour to the seabed.

Predatory species like the Longimanus and Mola-Mola are also part of the local ecosystem, alongside spinner dolphins and pilot whales that frequent the surrounding waters.

The waters around Fuvahmulah can be challenging. Currents are often strong and can be unpredictable, which is why experience in drift diving is highly beneficial.

The island's unique volcanic geography means the ocean depths rise quickly from the reef edge, creating a high-energy environment for the marine life that visits.
