Fuvahmulah Scuba Club

Fuvahmulah Scuba Club is an established SSI dive centre located on the unique island of Fuvahmulah in the Maldives. Unlike many of the atoll-based resorts, this location is surrounded by deep, open water, creating a distinct environment where nutrient-rich currents feed a highly productive marine ecosystem.

The centre has been operating for 25 years and has become internationally recognised for its reliable encounters with tiger sharks. It serves as a dedicated hub for both recreational diving and marine research, maintaining a strong emphasis on conservation and ethical wildlife interactions.

The team is composed of experienced local professionals, including dive guides, boat captains, and marine crew. The centre's approach is rooted in professional standards and a commitment to responsible diving practices, ensuring that all interactions with the island's famous pelagics are conducted ethically.

Adding a scientific dimension to the diving experience, the team includes a resident marine biologist. This expertise supports the centre's involvement in tiger shark research and conservation efforts. The staff are able to communicate in both English and French, catering to an international diving community.

As an SSI affiliated centre, the club offers a comprehensive range of training from entry-level to professional grades. You can begin with the SSI Basic Diver or progress through the Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications.

For divers looking to specialise, the centre provides various SSI Specialty courses, including Deep Diving and Night Diving. More advanced training is also available, such as the SSI Diver Stress and Rescue and the Divemaster programme. The centre also provides the SSI React Right course for emergency response training.

The centre provides full equipment hire for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes essential items such as regulators, BCDs, and fins, as well as torches for night diving.

The primary draw of Fuvahmulah is the abundance of large pelagics. You can expect to see Tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) year-round, alongside Thresher shark, hammerhead sharks, and silky sharks. Other frequent visitors include oceanic whitetip sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks, and manta rays.

In the open water, you will encounter large schools of trevallies, tuna, and great barracuda. The surrounding reefs are also home to various reef fish and snapper (Lutjanus). During certain seasons, whale sharks may also be spotted in the area.

The reef structure itself is built upon diverse Hard coral (Scleractinia), providing a home for a wide array of colourful reef fish. These gardens offer excellent conditions for observing the intricate details of the reef ecosystem.

The island is surrounded by deep, open water, which allows nutrient-rich currents to rise near the reef. These currents are a key factor in the area's high productivity and the concentration of large marine life.

Visibility is generally good, typically ranging between 20 and 45 metres. Because the island sits in open water, the marine life is highly active, driven by the constant flow of nutrients through the area.
