Liquid Shark Divers

Located on the unique island of Fuvahmulah, Liquid Shark Divers (LSD) serves as a dedicated hub for divers seeking encounters with some of the ocean's most iconic species. The centre focuses on a conservation-led approach, aiming to change how the world perceives sharks through respectful, non-intrusive observation.

Fuvahmulah is not your typical Maldivian atoll; it is a single island surrounded by deep water, which brings a constant flow of pelagic life to the surrounding reefs. This geography allows for year-round tiger shark sightings and frequent visits from other large predators.

The centre operates as an official SSI Training Centre, providing a structured environment for both recreational divers and those looking to progress their professional careers. Whether you are here for a single tiger shark dive or a full training programme, the focus remains on safety and intimate encounters.

The team is composed of local Maldivian guides who have grown up in these waters and possess an intimate knowledge of the local shark populations. They are joined by the founder, Sina, an award-winning underwater photographer who provides specialised guidance for those looking to capture high-quality imagery.

Instruction is delivered in English, German, and Spanish. To maintain safety during tiger shark dives, the centre follows a strict briefing protocol and utilises multiple safety divers.

With a maximum ratio of four divers per guide, the centre ensures that even in challenging conditions, you receive personalised attention. This small-group approach is central to their philosophy of providing safe, high-quality diving experiences.

As an SSI Training Centre, Liquid Shark Divers offers a comprehensive range of courses. Beginners can start with a Try Dive or progress through the Basic Diver and Open Water Diver certifications. Advanced divers can further their skills with the Advanced Open Water, Deep Dive, and Enriched Air Nitrox courses.

For those looking to refine their technique, specific specialties are available, including Perfect Buoyancy, Waves, Tides & Currents, and the SSI Photo & Video Specialty. The centre also offers Shark Ecology and Stress & Rescue training.

Professional divers can pursue the Divemaster programme here. The centre also provides Scuba Skills Updates for experienced divers looking to refresh their abilities before heading into the blue.

The centre operates a spacious, modern, and clean boat designed to accommodate divers comfortably. The vessel is equipped with a dedicated crew to manage logistics and safety on board.

During the trips, passengers have access to water, coffee, tea, and snacks. Nitrox is available on board for those looking to extend their bottom time.

The centre provides full rental kit, including regulators, BCDs, and fins. For those who only require specific items, single item rentals are available. Wetsuits, masks, and snorkels are also provided for hire.

Safety is a priority on shore, with oxygen availability on site. For divers looking to stay longer, the centre can assist with arranging accommodation at various local options, ranging from budget-friendly retreats to four-star hotels.

The waters around Fuvahmulah are famous for their large predators. Tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) encounters are possible year-round, while hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) are most common between October and November. Thresher sharks are frequently seen, particularly during their peak seasons in February–April and August–September.

You can also expect to see oceanic mantas and whale sharks during the February–April window. Other regular visitors include silvertip sharks, bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas), and various species of reef fish.

The reef structures themselves are vibrant, featuring extensive hard coral (Scleractinia) and soft corals. You will often see large schools of fish, including giant trevally, rainbow runners, snapper (Lutjanus), and batfish.

Macro life and smaller residents include octopus, stingrays, and various species of turtles. The diverse topography of the reefs, from overhangs to deep walls, provides plenty of nooks for reef life to thrive.

Diving in Fuvahmulah requires an understanding of local currents. Some sites, such as Farikede, are known for very strong, turbulent currents that require an experienced diver.

Many of the sites are located on the edge of deep drop-offs or along prominent ridges, meaning you will often be diving in areas where currents run through the reef. Divers should be comfortable with drift diving and managing their buoyancy in moving water.
